What kind of MPG can I expect from a '97 7.3L E350?

I cross posted this in the van section because I hadn't seen this area for this era of engine. I hope cross posting is ok. Anyways I found a '97 e350 passenger van for sale locally for dirt cheap. 250,000 miles. I googled what kinda mileage it should get and I was surprised that nobody reported very good mileage. Some were getting 8mpg (from a diesel?!?!??) A few reported 15. I expected closer to 20. It'd be used for about 70 miles of hiway driving a day.
What should it be getting stock and what could I do to get better mpg? Is it as easy as turning down the pump?

I think cross posting is discouraged.

I just bought a '97 F-250HD. I drove it from the Illinois-Wisconsin boarder down to Lafayette, IN. Granted this is almost 100% highway, I averaged 22.5 MPG.

I have a '96 F250 with 3.55 diff, factory size tires, auto tranny, and a campertop. I can usually achieve 23 mpg at 55 mph and 21 mpg at 70 mph under favorable conditions (no headwind, etc.) I tow a 27 foot travel trailer at 60 mph and see 14 mpg.

However, this is a pickup. The vans are probably different. Plus, there are so many variables concerning engine and tranny condition that you almost have to just try the van to see what happens.

The key is going to be the 3.55 axle. I had one in my '96 and by '01 they were no longer available so I don't know when they disappeared. I assume they were available in the vans. I forget the exact numbers now but it seems with the 3.55 I could turn around 1600 at 100 kph (60 mph) which gave some really sweet mileage. I could reliably get over 25 mpg to a real genuine Canuck gallon (roughly 20 mpg using that wimpy-ass US gallon). I could be wrong on the exact RPM/speed thing but I know the mpg numbers are right. I never came close to those numbers with my '01 which had the 3.73 axle. The mileage on my '06 disgusts me but that's a whole 'nuther thread.

Bob,
The advantage to the smaller US gallon is we can fit more gallons in the tank and not have to make as many stops for fuel-ups.
