New Source for International Water Pump - NAPA

I've been looking into upgrading my water pump to the International version with the built in coolant filter header and have found an alternative source for the pump besides Navistar. A company called Haldex sells the same pump in both new and reman form. The great news is the price. I just ordered a new pump from NAPA for $200 plus shipping. This is almost the same price as the standard Powerstroke pump. Plus there is no core charge or need to return the old one when buying the new version. For some reason the reman pump actually cost about $40 more than the new one and requires a core charge or returned pump. Unfortunately, Haldex does not sell direct and my Napa parts guy really struggled to get it since they don't normally sell it. Napa is a Haldex dealer though and should be able to get it. I ended up calling Haldex myself and then gave Napa the contact info for the person I was dealing with. A place called FleetPride could get it as well and for a little less money even.

Haldex part numbers -
New - RW6114
Reman - RW4114X

That's the same problem I had. I found the part numbers first and then called local distributors, nobody could find the number for the new pump. That's when I called Haldex. The person I talked to verified the part number and availability and told me to have Napa call him directly. The other retailers I talked to had to call in to get price and availability as well.

It was during another call I made to Haldex that I learned they manufacture the reman pump and buy the new pump from someone else. He asked my why I didn't want a reman. He was a little surprised when I told him the new pump was cheaper than his reman. But the big benefit of the new pump for me was there is no need for a core.

That's a very good question that I didn't think to ask. I will find out. Both pumps do carry the same 1 year warranty though.

Our water pump has the lower rad hose water neck on the drivers side. Make sure you order the Ford Powerstroke version and not one for a school bus.

It is the school bus version of the pump with the built in coolant header. The full story can be found Here.

I called Haldex this morning to ask where the New pump is made. He didn't know for sure, but thought it was probably an import. Though he didn't know from where.

I'm not sure how big a deal that is as I've never asked where any of the water pumps (or other parts for that matter) that I've purchased over the years were made. Something to consider though.

I picked up my New Navistar water pump this week. It looks pretty sweet. I also have figured out that a Wisconsin company called Geomar makes it. I called them and was told the pump is assembled in the US. I believe the machined casting is probably what they import. They don't sell direct, but will give you a list of places to buy it. Might even be able to get it cheaper by eliminating Haldex from the chain.

Figured I'd follow this up with the death of my Geomar pump since it died last week. 3.5 years and 30,000 miles. The bearing went quick too once it started leaking. The price for a new one at the International dealer was only $215, so that's what I replaced it with. Hopefully it will last longer than the Geomar.

Wow! I think I have about 200,000 more miles than that on my stock one! In general this is a trend I've noticed with water pumps on L10 and M11 Cummins as well a several others, water pumps living about 1 yr or 2,000 hours. (We don't track miles so much since we only average 15mph) I hope you get more than 30,000 on your IH one. Let us know!

I just picked up my International pump from Absolute Bus Sales for $200 and they offer a 1 year/100k mile warranty on it. Hopefully it doesn't fail in short order too, or if it does before the warranty end of course.

If you figure out how to do a clean install on an early PSD (94-95), post up how you did it (bottom hose on radiator is on the opposite side than the later ones) as I've never seen anyone do it. Cheers!

Hi Patrick, I was the guy who posted on the 94-95 thread concerning this too. The project of course snowballed into other stuff, the intercooler for staarters, but I'll finally be doing that this weekend. It will be 3 pieces with couplers so I don't know how "clean" it can be, but I'll upload a few picks regardless.

My factory WP on my '96 PSD was replaced due to leaking @ 138,000 miles. I went with a Ford reman at the time. I remember the parts manager said they had a bad batch of reman's and 3 out of four leaked after install. I was real happy about that but 10-12 yrs later & 160,000+ miles it's still just weeping, not enough to replace yet.

I had a bad situation 25 yrs ago on a Ford 300-6 where I'd have to replace a leaking water pump every year & about 8000-10,000 miles. The "FREE Replacement" still ended up costing me big bucks for the new antifreeze every year. I was told years ago that the cheap rebuilds use a very cheap material on their face seal to keep antifreeze away from the bearing. The OEM and good pumps use Ceramic face seals, most of which were made at the time by a division of a famous brewing company located in Golden CO.

I've often found that trying to save a few bucks on "CHEAP" repair parts ends up costing a LOT of extra money, and probably moreso on waterpumps than anything else.

Could this pump have worked?
I ask because my '97 also has the lower hose outlet on the driver side. I have no problem currently, just for future reference.
