My buddy was on a Farmers Union tour of Nicaragua many years ago. It was during Sandinista's time, so a while ago now. The theory was that a bunch of left wing tourist farmers would travel through the rural areas patching up the old machinery which was still there from pre-Sandinista times but no longer running because the infrastructure had been destroyed by the socialists. (you may infer that my buddy and I do not share a common political view)

Anyway, he swears that they came across an 8-71 Jimmy on a water pump that was being rope started every morning. He's a pretty straight shooter so I'm inclined to believe him, no matter how implausible the story. He said it took a big crew pulling on the rope.

That 8-71 ain't no Briggs & Stratton for sure.

If they had the rope wrapped around a big enough pulley and enough guys, it would work. Nicaragua doesn't get cold temps, so that wouldn't be a problem. Trying that in the winter in the northern US would wear out the whole crew before it started.

The rest of the story was that they came on this engine and pump out in the middle of nowhere. It was obviously missing a starter and didn't have a battery so they assumed it wasn't in use but he said it looked like it could run. So they went looking for someone in charge and when they found the farmer or whoever he told them what the deal was.

He said at the time there was a lot of pretty good machinery that was slowly getting wore into the ground. I guess Fidel wasn't able to supply John Deere parts.
