Adding 12v DC Power Outlet

I have my own TPMS to monitor the tires on my Airstream and for now, I'm going to use it before I spend the cash/time/effort to transition over to Fords TPMS system. I like to keep the TPMS display monitor by the driver door post. I also have a dash camera that records when driving. Last thing I want is wires draped over, across, around the dash, so I'm thinking that I can buy a three or four port 12vDC distribution port and mount it up under the dash by the steering column. Now here's the issue, finding a power source. At this point the only power source is from the up-fitter switches. I'd have to route the power distribution power wire out through the firewall and then connect to the up-fitter switch wiring bundle. Anyone been down the road? I'm open to suggestions. Wish that Ford had put a couple USB connection in the overhead console. Thanks

I put a carpeted dash mat cover over the wires draped across the dash. I have an HD camera on the windshield, and power a Radar/Laser Detector that also shows my speed using internal GPS. I used velcro hook on the bottom of the detector to attach it to the pile of the dash mat cover.

What dash cam are you using? Work ok, happy with it? Does it continually record and roll over? Max memory?
Thanks,
Joe

I use the Cobra drive HD with GPS. It came with an 8 GB microSD card that I changed to 32 GB (the maximum size it allows). It records in 3 minute files that get written over when full. The 32 GB card holds about 100 three minute files. I keep an extra 32 GB MicroSD card I can swap out if there is something I want to save. It works ok, the only thing I noticed is any files shorter than 3 minutes (partial files when ending a trip) don't have audio. I shut the unit down when I get to my destination.

Is it powered from the truck, or just a battery? I have a couple of GoPros and to me, they are difficult to use, can't power from truck, and overheat regularly. Need to get something dependable that runs all the time the truck is on and overwrites unless stopped to save something. More and more, I am encountering some near-hits that others cause and I want to have video as a backup.
Thanks,
Joe

It comes with a 12 volt plug that will fit in the cigar lighter / power port of the truck, or you can use a mini usb connector. I have used it on a drive from central California to Denton County Texas and back (3200 miles round trip) with no problems. I never go anywhere without the camera on, and it is powered by the vehicle. If you want to be sure the audio is also recorded, you need to keep the camera recording for at least 3 minutes beyond an incident. The camera is 1080p HD.
