I have Blackstone Labs analyze a sample from EVERY change. I'm averaging nearly 10K miles (per IOLM) and Blackstone tells me I could run longer if I wanted.

The oil isn't the same for the 7.3 and 6.7

Oil is always changing and Ford came out with a different spec for the 6.7. I am not sure what it is off the top of my head right now but I do remember a discussion on the subject. As for how black the oil gets It doesn't seem to effect the truck. I have 60,000 miles on my truck and it doesn't use any oil and the truck runs fine. I have talked to the diesel tech that works on my truck at my dealer and he said that was normal.

I wish I had a scientific explanation for this as well. I bought an Audi A6 TDI last year. It uses a "special" VW 507.00 oil that is harder to find than winning lottery tickets. Audi says it will go 10,000 miles. I'm sticking with 5,000-mile oil changes anyway. Even at 5K that stuff comes out blacker than black. One day after an oil change it is already that color. Permanent ink has nothing on this stuff. My 7.3 on the other hand has the same OCI - 5K. The oil I drain from that is only marginally darker than what goes back in. Why? Maybe the regenerations? Maybe the increased back pressure going through catalytic converters and diesel exhaust filters? Maybe the EGR systems? Maybe something different in the oil? Who knows, but I guarantee you there is an exponential difference in the rate they change colors.

Engines with a egr always have a higher soot level in the oil.
Once I started running LE in the Jetta, the oil stayed cleaner longer.
Same with the 7.3.

Jasper - what LE oil? Delo 400LE or Lubrication Engineers brand? Are you running 15W40 in a TDI?
