Rapid-Heat supplemental heating

I can't find anything in the owners manual about the rapid-heat supplemental heating that my 2017 F450 supposedly has. It's been cold lately and I don't perceive any rapid heating before the radiator heats up.

How can I tell if it's working?

Mine goes into the shop Friday with same issue. Rapid-heat is supposed to cut in whenever the coolant temperature is below 85 degrees. On my truck it only engages with the defroster. Steps to reproduce
1) start up when cold
2) turn to max heat (fan goes to max, defrost automatically selected)
3) wait a second and turn fan to medium, select dash vents instead of defrost
4) hold hand in front of vent and you will feel a brief surge of warm air (after the A/C from defrost turns off but before the heating element fully cools)

Dealer just called. Rapid-heat does not work because the truck doesn't have it. Yes, I ordered that option. Yes, it is on the window sticker. But, that is not how the truck was built...

Why me lord?

what did the dealer say about being on the window sticker, need to stand behind it?

The service manager said he's never seen a case like this in the 19 years he's worked there. They kept the truck over the weekend so that they can work with Ford to figure out just which parts need to be ordered. So ya, the dealer is planning to stand behind it, but they don't know how Ford will want to handle it. They would probably like to just give me my $250 buck back, too bad, so sad.

Regardless, it sucks to have the dash pulled along with who knows what else from wiring harnesses to the A/C box. Speaking of which, he is really hoping they have to replace the entire A/C box so he can just order a complete unit as opposed to pulling it apart and (hopefully) getting it to all go back together right...

If you search the interweb for should I order Rapid-heat you'll find two camps; this is the best option since the wheel, not worth it I can barely tell its working. I wonder how common this is. I bet some assembly plant worker found he can get $10 scrap for each one he takes out in his lunchbox and nobody seems to notice they're not installed

I have the system on my truck and since I read your post, I decided it needs to be tested (my truck is parked in the garage). Started the truck, drove to the ed of the driveway, motor was at 50 degrees and heater was blowing warm air.

Good luck on your situation

The short answer is: With a cold truck, turn the temperature dial to max heat and set the fan speed in the medium to low range. You should feel warm air right away. Noticeably warmer air, not, gee, I think the air might be a little warmer...

The link ArticDriver posted covers the main points. After chasing this around with the dealership I'll say there may be some variation in details (coolant temperature needs to be below 75 degrees? 85 degrees?) but overall that covers it.

Due. to being old and tech-challenged----trying to get the SHeat to work on my '17 KR. Seems to me, no amount of working the pushbuttons on the climate control, nor thru the touch screen, get the results needed.
Any specific instructions for the auto-controlled dashes? Sure would like to get it working, its cold in OH....

Joe, make sure you got it. I'm thinking you've got a Texas truck and may not have gotten it. After that, start the truck (vice pressing the on button without pressing the brake pedal). Using the buttons on the dash (not climate screen), make sure you're on auto (some say dual auto - both knobs lights are on), then press max defrost (it's pointed out on page 146 in my owners manual). After that, adjust the fan speed and press the air distribution buttons to get air blowing to the vents. If you have supplemental heating, you should feel warm air. We do. It's not gang busters hot, but it beats the normal cold air we'd get. If you didn't remote start the truck, use the climate screen & turn on the heated steering wheel. You're good to go. David

Quick update on my issue. Turns out Ford Tech provided the wrong schematic to the dealership (confidence inspiring, no?) and once they figured that out they determined that Rapid-heat had been installed after all. They've ordered a replacement heating element and are pulling the dash to troubleshoot and replace the element.

Yes, confidence-inspiring, indeed. While I have heard of options missing before on new trucks, usually it was an order mistake, not just a screwup at the plant. Sure hope it all goes back together well as before...

David,
Not a TX truck--delivered and bought in Whitefish, MT. On window sticker....
Tried as instructed, no luck. Start truck; on auto--both knob lights on; pressed max defrost...air blowing high speed thru defrost, but cold. Change air speed, no difference. Changed to main vent distribution--this cut fan speed to low and cancelled max defrost. No heat.
Thought I felt heat for split second, but not long. Retried, no difference. If I push the main vent button, the max def goes off and fan speed goes to low. What am I doing wrong?

I don't know that you're doing anything incorrect. When we tested ours, I upped the fan speed after selecting the vent distribution and got mildly warm air. Nothing to brag about, but it was warmer than the 2009 would have given us. I can tell you that our 2017 will defrost the front window way quicker than our 2009 would on a similar cold morning.
