About Your Hours

You've actually got 14 hours to work, only 11 are driving.

I normally drive right up to 11 hours and plan my overnights that way. Pre Trip Inspection and fueling, hooking up and off and in my case delivery are all "on duty not driving"

Eating is off duty time. Anything else is on the driving clock, but: "If you ain't moving you ain't making any money".

Time is money. I eat sandwiches that I make and anything else has to be carried in a cooler in the back because spending money oin the road comes right out of the profit. Rest stops are fast but they are always a good place for DOT to ambush you.

What are you planning on pulling?

Really rough times right now, Nine trucking compoanies are going under every day. These are mostly one or two truck operations. This was mostly caused by fuel prices but with those easing off, things may look up.

Getting financing for a truck purchase may be hard. A lot of car/truck/dealers are going out of business because they can't get financing for themselves or for their customers.

I have a relative that works for a broker that got us a contract with some freight services and auto transports. Were hauling 40' lowboy gooseneck. Driving Dodge megacab that weighs at 9500lb and the trailer weighs in at 6500lbs. Which only leaves us about 10000lbs for cargo. On a easy day it will be 2 cars which will put us at our 26000lb limit. We'll usually loading tractors, farm equipment, and big trucks, which can easily put 15000 to 20000 on the trailer. Thats why I'm have to go commercial. Probably be right about 35000lbs.

We negotiated at 1.10 per mile. It was a fair price. But that means having 2 drivers, we have to split the pay. I put all the numbers into the computer, we'll make out good if we can keep driving. Thats why I don't want to have to worry about DOT putting us out for 10 hours or worrying about tickets. I don't even eat out at my house right now, I cook everything. I try to keep food intake to about $6 a day.

Financing for a truck is no problem. I paid cash for the megacab and probably will trade it in and pay cash for the next truck.

I photoshop a F650 and this is what I want. Like I said earlier, I just haven't decided on what make of truck. I really need to see the value of a freightliner for all that extra cash it will cost.

1.10 a mile will not pay the bills long term. If you have no overhead for the truck it looks good numbers wise until you have to replace the truck or fix the truck.

What are you paying the driver?

1996 F-250 extended cab long box five speed. Home made Tymar, 203 Stat, 60 gal in bed fuel cell, 315/75's, no muffler, ebpv welded open 3" to 3" DP, Babies. 290K, still chugging, and still smoking when cold.

UPDATED 1/1/09 Replace so far. 1 LUK flywheel+clutch, 2 thermostats, 2 set of brakes, 1 set of calipers, 5 CPS, 3 sets of tires, 2 Transfer pumps, 1 Injector modual, 1 Computer, 2 Alt, 2 sets of batteries, 1 Water pump, 6 Belts, 1 PS hose, 2 Sets ball joints, 2 set u-joints, 2 carrier bearing, 2 Speed sensors, 1 oil pres sender, 1 temp sender, 4 sets of e-break cables, 1 front fuel tank, 2 rear fuel tanks, 2 set of glow plugs, 7 Glow plug relays, Oil galley o-rings, Turbo pedistal o-rings, EBPV o-rings, 3 sets of Injector O-rings, 1 Vac-pump, 1 new carpet, 1 total paint job.Total $$$ in repairs v/s miles driven = 4.6 cents per mile. Add fuel to that it jumps to 16.5 cents per mile over the life of the truck.

j corey, where are you located? im in sarasota fl, and there is one right around the corner. with my fulltime job, and my transport business, i didnt make it to the dealer for you yesterday, but i did put a call in this am, and am hoping to hear back from them soon. i can ask them about the size, and the warranty, the dealer by me is actually just a sportchassis dealer, not a full frieghtliner dealer. the service guy seemed VERY EAGER to have the sales men call me back with the info, i suppose they arent selling quite as well as honda civics right now....lol. i sat in all their trucks at daytona a few weeks ago, they had them all on display there. really a beautiful truck. ill let you know as soon as i hear back from them!

JUST HEARD BACK!!! great news, yes they are over the 75" dot regulation. the warranty is as follows: Engine-2year/250,000 and can be extended to 4year/250,000. Trans-4 year/unlimited miles. The truck itself- 2year/unlimited. Chuck at Southpointe Sport Chassis in Sarasota, FL said to give him a call, and he can give you any info you may need, and would be more than happy to set you up in one. since you need to do no mods to have the 75" this seems like your best route to me....... Chuck is the SportChassis Specialist for the area and his # is (941) 308-5141. Keep us updated on what you find out, and what you decide... good luck, and i hope this helps.

I have to finish loading these trailers, but I will give him a call little later today. I appreciate that very much for taking your time to find out if it is over 75". As many people that want to sleep in these CCS, you think they would advertise the 75" DOT APPROVED. I'm located in AL.

They can ask all they want, but you do not have to provide a receipt. If you had family or friends that you spent the night with there would be no receipt.

All they need to know is that you were off duty for the specified hours. There is nothing wrong with spending 10 hrs at a truck stop lounge, or sleeping on a rest area picnic table. If they want to give you a hard time start making your way up the food chain until you get to a supervisor that actually know the laws.

I am having a Freightliner Truck dealer build a pickup/hauler from a NEW M2 106 crew cab with a sleeper bed for far less than the cost of a Sportchassis. Sportchassis is an aftermarket manufacturer that sell packages - beautiful but not inexpensive. My truck will have a 5 year warranty, full leather, nav, dvd, air brakes & suspension, upgraded heated/cooled seats, automatic chains for snow driving...etc. for less than $80,000.00 BRAND NEW!

That is in correct. Sportchassis is a division of Freighliner that makes the package.If they weren't Freightliner Corporate wouldn't have it under their recreational use tab. [URL="http://www.freightlinertrucks.com/trucks/find-by-use/recreational/default.aspx[/URL] Now with that said buying fully loaded pickups(driver comfort is key to good production for a company) and having to trade them every 2-3 years because they are tired is far more expensive then buying one Sportchassis, and keeping 2-3 times as long or more. My friend finally realized this, and started switching over not too long ago. His trucks usually go 2-3k miles a week. Running virtually 24 hrs a day. No sleepers needed for these trucks. He does have two brand new Volvo tractors that are used for longer distance hauls. He hauls for his brother's auto tuning business, double duty horse farm work.

A trick i learned a while back is put every one of your receipts in a stamped envelope addressed to your company's mailing address. In order for the DOT to open the envelope they would need a federal search warrant.

If the ask to see your receipts for tolls or motels tell them you didn't get one. IF they cant PROVE WERE NO somewhere when you said they were they got nothing on you. The burden of proof is on them.

Attitude will get you nowhere, they can put you out of service and find anything they want, YOU will be the one to challenge whatever they write you for. Going up the chain of command usually results in NOTHING, especially in the scale.

I've seen it many many times, drivers who know it all, the DOT love to put them in their place.

They can keep you there as long as they want. They enforce the federal regs, BUT the state regs supercede the federal regs, so basically they can make it up as they go.

Any of you guys ever been thru a DOT check ?, I think not.

they key is to know the laws like the back of your hand, and make sure you are following every single one of them. there shouldnt be any "the trick is" or "they need to prove if" because they can and will find something. i got to the point with one check point, after passing through it on almost a daily basis for years, one DOT official, would basically give the truck and my logs a quick lookover, kick the tires and i was on my way, because he knew i was legit on everything. oneday at the same stop got a guy who must've had someone piss in his cereal that morning, because he checked EVERYTHING and wound up putting me OOS because my brakes were not adjusted "properly" apparently his adjusted properly and mine were totally different. he along with other people i have seen adjusted them; all the way tight, backed off 1/2 turn. my way and everyone in my family and our mechanics all adjusted them; all the way tight, backed off 1/4 turn, making the brakes that just that little bit tighter. but because they weren't up to HIS STANDARDS he put me out of service until i got a wrench and adjusted them, and he would not let me use his wrench to adjust them! so moral of the story....... yes they will get you if they want to get you, there is no way around it... the law is the law, and if you think you are smarter than them, they will make a law to prove they are the smarter ones!
