Fuel Gauge

Is it possible my fuel sending unit still operates correctly but the pick up tube fell/broke off? I've done a little reaching and this seems to happen often. I have got 440 miles out of a few tanks before but now I fill up when I get to 300 miles and the Gauge is below half maybe around 3/8.

Your pickup rests on the bottom of the tank, and IMO it cannot "fall off" unless it falls apart.
It can however crack and suck air when the fuel level drops below these cracks.

The sending unit is independent of the pickup, and would not be affected by it.
