Sled pulling

Well I have one question my wife is wanting to enter a sled pulling contest next year and of course it will be our first run. We have a 1988 F350 7.3 idi zf5 transmission all stock except she has 4 door flatbed and the class she wants to run is of course stock. She said for her run she is looking at 2nd gear all the way since 1st is granny gear and 4 low not 4 hi. Our question is has anyone seen a 7.3 non-stroker run and what can she expect off the run. Honest opinion would it be a total loss to enter this truck all stock?

I guess it comes down to finding out what what mods are allowed in the class (and if you plan on doing them or not), also is the class narrow enough to include only non-turbo trucks. If zero mods are allowed right down to the stock air filter and your truck is comparable to everyone else plus it isn't held together with binder twine and duct tape then I don't see why you wouldn't at least have a shot at placing well.

There may be a learning technique to pulling that could limit your success initially but that's part of the fun...learning something new.

I don't know much about sled pulling rules and how consistent they are from one place to another but still, at the end of the day, what does your truck have versus the competition? To me, that's the only way to answer your question.

If you end up going for it, good luck, I hope you do the blue oval proud!

What gear ratio is the rear end? The IDI isn't overly powerful but will pull hard all day long at near RPM limit. IIRC your HP/torque curve peaks somewhere near 2500 rpm. I could be off and maybe someone has a link to a graph.

Good luck and have fun.

I would go down to some sled pulls and talk to the competitors that are running a similar truck to yours and hers and see what they have to say. While they are quite competitive once they start pulling they will usually give you the shirt off of their backs to help you out and let you know just how to do it.
