Dead Forums,,

Seems all the old regulars have left the major forums, once the "Big Companies" buy the sight and flood with adds and spam,, it makes everyone leave. I have 14,000 posts almost on this sight,,been a member since 2000 I think, You used to be able to post something, a question say, and get an answer in an hour or two,, now the post sits with zero replies for weeks. (Yet, with all the BOTS on the sight, their advertisers think the sight is HOPPING with activity...it's a shame.

On one hand I kinda agree with you in that it seems like there is less engagement, and in some ways these forums have become platform for sponsors and an outlet for Ford Motor Company to connect with angry truck owners. I don't necessarily think either is a bad thing but some days it seems like I am reading more sales pitches and customer service shout outs.

With that said... I also think that it is also a reflection on the vehicles. The trucks and engines have gotten more reliable but at the same time more complex and diagnosing and repairing them has become a bit more difficult for the average truck owner with the shade tree itch to handle. This would also indicate that there are fewer people with the knowledge and experience to jump in and help. But there are still quite a few members here who can and do.

There are also a lot more public forums today then there were when Jason Lester started The Diesel Stop. Running a website and forums myself I can tell you that controlling spam bots is difficult at best with an open registration system in a publicly accessible forum and even with the best effort this will always be a problem to some degree.

Maybe its because I just hang around the 7.3 PSD forum and Ford has long since given up on this demographic

When I first joined here in 2002 there were only a couple of forums for the Ford diesels, now there are a dozen. That along with people not doing as much work on their own vehicles has slowed the forums down a lot.

Even a lot of the old members that owned the first generation PowerStroke have moved on to newer and newer trucks, that along with loosing interest in answering the same question over and over and over. I know that I now just pick and choose where I want to help.

I have not been on as long as others, but I also have noticed a lot of the same questions. That does make you lose interest.

One of the forums that I look at has a Knowledge Base. It breaks down frequently asked questions into categories. This makes it easier to select a problem area that others have solved.

The forum I am referring to has nothing to do with trucks. :: Panhead and Flathead site ::

There's also You Tube.... I guarantee that has taken a lot of traffic from these sites for repair how-to questions.

I've been around here a while too and yes, it does get old when a new member joins , does no searching and asks a question that has 150 fairly recent threads answering the same question.

I owned a 99 F250 and that's what got me to this website and a couple of others so I joined in April 99. I wonder about the names of many really good people that have come and gone over the years. One of those names is Smokeywren, he was always here and was a tremendous help to many, especially when it came to towing and towing weights.
Anyone know what became of him, he must be in his mid seventies by now.

I just googled his handle and I see he is on the F150forum now. Makes sense I guess since he replaced Sierra Blanca with a 150. Looks like he joined there back in late 2011 and has over 2200 posts so he's obviously still at it! Nice to see but ya, we miss him here. The feeling of this forum has definitely changed. I'm trying to stay engaged in the activity here but I'm struggling. I may have to join a second Ford forum with more activity.

I wonder if Jason is still around and would like to start a new one.............

I remember when Jason first started with TheFordDiesel.website and there were only maybe 1000 members max. People like eectech and Cochise, Beagle1 and then there is TexasTowncar(RIP), Hutch from Augusta. These guys and so many more have come and gone but shared so much knowledge with us.

And us IDI guys had cansarguy. What about Roofie? The password reset took out a lot of people and the difficulty of resetting my password almost kept me off. I'm sure there were lots of members that simply gave up and moved on.

Yup, still can't get back into my original blackout login. Also, mentioned to the wife this morning how I can't even look at a page without it refreshing constantly and me losing where I was in the posts. Had to install Ad Blocker to even read anything.
Yes, I feel the empty room as well.

I am not trying to poke the bear here but I want to share my thoughts which I have been keeping sequestered for some time- it seems that The Diesel Stop took a turn for the worse when it was acquired by the Autoguide group. The community feel has by and large been lost. The technical issues with the forum software and the performance of the site in general is a bit disappointing. Right now I sit here looking at this page with SEVEN advertisements which caused the page to load slowly... advertisements that rotate and reload causing the page to freeze, jerk when scrolling and freeze the display in the reply box as I am typing causing missing letters and gaps. I can sit back and just watch the screen and observe something loading every five seconds. It is annoying. It is frustrating. Website communities run by corporate entities tend to suffer because they do not seem to prioritize content and usability. The warm human aspect that this community once had because it was owned and run by a person that had a genuine interest in the content and participated in it daily has tuned cold and seemingly distant in my opinion. Like I said, I am not trying to poke the bear but I often wonder if the owner(s) and the administrator of this website actually participate and use these forums and interact with the community or if it is run by some IT guys in a cubicle at some obscure office building. Pardon me, now I need to go back an fill in all of the missing parts of words and gaps caused by the loading advertisements.

If I remember right the advertising on the site started way before Jason sold it. I remember the grumbling starting when he started to offer memberships on the site and if you bought a membership then a lot of the advertising would disappear.

But if you go to one of the other forums that is still held privately you will also see that they are slow also as far as participation. I know of a couple of forums that were started up because of the way that this one was ran before it was sold to Autoguide.
