SadlerB_98 I just had my serviced at dealership and was told I had both the internal and external filter. This part number is listed on the receipt: Screen Assembly 8C3Z 7A098 D. I don't see the internal part number listed and sure hope that they changed it like they said they would.

SadlerB_98 I was checking on this as well. 2008 had a change with the 2nd run productions to remove the external filter and only went with an internal one. Best bet is to give your VIN to a Ford Parts counter so they can make sure which setup you have. I've just decided to let the dealer do it next month and get the part number then for future ones.

I have the V10, so not sure if your tranny is the same.

Mark Kovalsky I don't keep track of part numbers. The reusable gasket is really reusable. I've reused them many times.

Thanks. Do you by chance have the part number for the internal filter? Mine is an 08 v10 auto 4.10. Also, is the "reusable" gasket really reusable?

Old thread ... but regarding this external filter, do you still need to have the internal filter after you install this external one?

Not that I know of. And I do know this transmission very thoroughly.

It does require a heated flush machine to change all of the fluid. Maybe that is what he meant. Sniffing the oil to see if it needs to be changed is about as useful as checking what color the truck is painted. If you can smell that it needs to be changed it's too late, the fluid is burnt and the trans is probably also burnt. How can he tell the level of the additives? How about the viscosity of the fluid? He is very old school, and that will cost people with one of these new school trucks big money.

That's just totally wrong. He does not know what he's talking about. Oil viscosity gets lower as the oil is subjected to shear inside an engine and trans. Oil (both engine and trans, though more so in the engine) gets contaminated. The filter CANNOT remove dissolved contaminants. Additives wear out. New filters do not replace the additives. He is VERY ignorant about modern oils.

Oh my gosh, the oil though? That's insane. I didn't change the oil on a motorcycle I had and it blew up while I was riding it...I'm guessing it was related!

badbart Opinions will vary. I knew an old guy when I was a teenager that never changed the oil in his cars or trucks. Just the filter. His logic was that oil cannot be broken down. Must admit, his old Datsun truck was still running when he died. Didn't smoke either. Go figure.

Many people don't believe in changing transmission, rear end, power steering, brake fluids. They just drive it till it needs a new whatever.

Excursionator I've always heard that you shouldn't change your transmission fluid at all, haha.

This guy has some good advice, guess I was wrong. Says 30,000 miles, uh oh, BRB.

meganzhang Im worried a lot about my car's engine oil. This makes sense, considering oil bathes and lubricates the power plant of the vehicle. But it's the job of the transmission to parcel out the engine's power to the wheels

Grodyman Drain and drop the pan and replace filter, then refill back to capacity. Do this at minimum every 30K, or sooner if towing frequently.

Or have dealer service tranny, that is what I do with my Expedition, going on 112K with no issues.

Little General I have 110,00 on my 08 and last week I asked a Ford Mechanic the same question and he pulled the dipstick and looked,smelled and said keep driving. Most of my miles are highway, 5% towing. I know I will be corrected, but he claims it not just a simple filter change, something about valve body connected with filter?
