Yup, life is expensive around here. My truck is commercial and registered for just shy of 20K lbs plus the cost of the service plate for trailers, that drives the tags up considerably but the e-test is every two years and annual safety inspection cost, that applies even to Joe weekender with any pickup that has a door sticker showing over 10K, whether he registers it for that much weight or not.
At 10K registered, I think his tag cost would be about $200 so that's 200 tag+150 safety+ 50 e-test(1/2 the $110, it's two years) so that's $400 year before insurance to keep a newer 250/350 on the road unless it has the 9900 GVWR option.

|badbart||Makes me feel better. Florida has no emissions testing or annual safety inspections and my tags cost around $45 for my truck.|

|LMJD||Phil, to put you in an even better mood, unless the law changed, I understood the yearly registration in Oregon was $32 or $34 even if it was a $200,000 Rolls Royce.|

|Phil G.||Oh, that is E-test.... just an e-test for the $114, then there's the annual safely inspection on top of that, it's using between $100-$200 if nothing in found wrong, it requires brakes to be disassembled and pads/rotors measured and recorded and of course full front end inspection, leaks, lights, windows up and down, seat belts working, etc etc the whole deal. Isn't that great??|

|RT||Our annual inspection on a diesel in Texas is $7.00 - yep, seven whole bucks... That gets you a quick look at your wiper blades, a glance at tire tread, making sure all your light bulbs work, and - most importantly - making sure the horn works since the last time is was probably used was the inspection the year before.|

I just had mine tested yesterday so I could get my new tags for the year.
SNAP test results were 8.4 with a max limit to pass of 30. Man, I hate listening to that test... on the carpet at over 4000 RPM for several seconds 3 times in a row. It just doesn't sound right having a diesel revving that high. Now I wait to see if the valve train stays intact for the next few weeks. I seldom ever rev the truck much over 3K for very short periods of time usually when up shifting in tow haul with a load.
My reward for passing was a $114 bill for the test then $681 bill for tags for the truck and service plate. Expensive day....

|RT||Well, as much as I hate government intrusion, I'd be ok with a snap test in Texas. I swear I can't remember the last time I saw a Dodge that didn't fog the whole intersection every time they hit the accelerator...|

|DonWarkentin||Yes, we have to get smog checks in California, even though there were no smog requirements the year they were manufactured, and the vehicle has no smog control equipment on it. The smog check is to check to see if there are any modifications made to the vehicle. The vehicle must be completely stock with no modifications in order to pass smog.|

Europe is also seeing quite a bit of legislation against older diesels...sure hope nobody starts that over here.

Funny thing but I did not feel much difference with the 53-cetane...granted it wasn’t very cold in the mornings when that cetane bump helps. Maybe slight improvement keeping acceleration thru the mountain passes.
