ArcticDriver My 2000 had the cackle and was loud and had poor acceleration when cold until the EOT got up around 145.

My 2002s are much quieter.

I can understand how OP has received two opposing views from his co-worker and his friend.

Wimp!!
Most are louder when cold. Below a certain oil temp, the PCM will crank up the HP oil pressure to compensate for the oil being thicker going thru the injection system. Could also be the old "cackle", which was supposedly an issue with the earlier ('99-'00) trucks till Ford fixed it with the "long lead" injector in #8.
Me, I just install ear plugs and drive on.

RT Probably has a different tune or different CPS. Mine is louder with the dark blue or black CPS and with my higher HP tunes. Pretty quiet at stock with the grey CPS. It hates being cold even in our one week of devastating 40 degree freezing weather.

Cold engine charastics

Thought I'd ask I know a diesel doesn't like being under normal operating temp. But what's normal charastics for a cold motor my 7.3 ticks pretty loudly until I'm about 15 minutes down the road I've always heard it more through the drivers side firewall... one coworker of mine said his does it and it's normal, than a friend told me that it's not and his truck doesn't do it... so I'm trying to figure out if this is a concern or to leave it be... it's worse during Minnesota winters but will still make the noise first thing during the summer
