I had a grey smoking problem but it healed itself. However, it seems to be running rich. No power or idle prolbems, mileage is normal, just stinks of extra diesel exhaust outside and often inside the cab. No big puff on start up. Could these be related and what could cause it to be slightly rich?

I don't mean to scare you but I had the same issue. It cleared up I thought.

No smoke just rich exhaust. It ended up being a stuck injector(open) No codes or anything. I let mine go and now I am replacing my engine because the cylinder washed down and broke a ring @ 68,000 miles. So I would get it checked out to find out which one.

I agree, how do i identify the bad injector? Will a buzz and contribution test do it? I have to pay for the test so I am looking for the most economical one.

I took it to the :ford: dealer and they ran 5 or 6 tests on it to tell, You can take off the valve covers and unplug each injector while it is running and see if you can tell a difference in the way it runs, (flame suit on):nono:

Some people on here go crazy when you talk about that because the voltage can kill you apparently, and we are all stupid hillbilly shade tree mechanics if we even thought of doing something so backward and stupid.

Get the point of what people are going to tell you.

But it can be done, we did it to mine and we are still here. I would take it to :ford: though. The local dealer charged me 1/2 hour labor for running the tests.

I thought about trying the certain death methode, but it runs fine so I don't think it would make a difference. I may have to pay the local dealer to test teh darned injectors, they work on the big trucks mostly. btw, What is an IPR?
