We was a pullen a trailer in my van which weighs around 10,000 pounds. The trailer weighs around 6,000 lbs. I was pushing it hard to get to an appointment when all of a sudden there was a loud blower type noise. Also last time I changed the oil and air filter the air filter was caked with a oily dirt type crap all over the filter. Any ideas would really be appreaciated.

I am not an expert by any means but my '06 does the same thing. I never heard the '04 make that much noise but the '06 sounds like the fan kicking in to help cool the engine. It's on my list to ask dealer what it is. But that's what I think it is anyway, just a fan kicking in. As that's the only time I hear mine start up is when it is getting worked hard pulling the trailer along the interstate.

It is the fan. It comes on very often on the 06s and I read somewhere on this site that the latest flash includes programming to turn the fan on more frequently. Did you get your 04 flashed to the latest version?

In hot weather, just idling, my fan will come one but you cant tell until you give it gas. I wouldnt worry about it.

Well a couple of time I had parked next to the door on our welding shop and it may have been flashed but I dont think it was close enough to cause a burn. I think that is the only time it's been out of my sight except when it was at the shop because half the glow plugs didn't work. I bought it used at 86,000 miles. Thanks every one for the good news. What about the grime on the air filter

I had the same thing happen to me this weekend. Pulling my (10,000lbs) trailer and I noticed a blower noise when working hard. IT'S NOT MY FAN. I know what my fan sounds like. This only happens during med-high boost & rpms. It sounds like the a/c blows harder through the vents, but a/c isn't on and there is no air coming out of them. I can't put my finger on it??? Any ideas???

It still could be the fan. The fan has a couple of operating speeds and the loud one comes on when the engine is getting too warm. The LOUD one comes on when the loud speed doesn't cool it down.

I know what the loud fan speed sounds like..... The reason why I don't think it's the fan, because the noise happens cold or hot. The fan usually comes on when the truck has reached operating temp. I also noticed my boost is kinda low and it doesn't hold steady like it did. It slowly decreases without letting off the gas. So. I got to thinkin. I do remember when I was towing this weekend I did peg out my boost gauge a few times climbing a long steep hill. Boost gauge only goes to 35 psi. So I'm wondering if I blew my intercooler or any of the rubber conections on the piping. Any thoughts???

if you loose an intercooler hose you won't be able to keep up with granny's wheel chair and noise will not go away.

Its either the radiator fan or the thrust bearing in your turbo is bottoming out.

Well within 15 mins of writing the last post I decided to go look everything over and if I couldn't find anything I was gonna disconnect the power to the fan. Sure enough the rubber connection on top of the turbo has a one inch slice in it on the bottom. I'm gonna replace it tomarrow, hopefully that solves my problems......with the truck anyway.....
