I just bought an 05 F-350 DRW King ranch I love the truck but it has 500 miles on it and it's leeking at the rear main seal. I am getting dime to quarter sized drops coming out of the bell housing. I can't believe it. I have been reading the posts on this sight an I thought the rear main problem had beed fixed. Ths sticker on the door has a build date of 04/05.I just traded an 03 duramax 3/4 ton. It ran great no problems but I like Ford. I may have made a 52,300.00 dollar mistake.

You won't know for sure if it is an oil leak until you have the dealer put dye in it first.

Mine had the stain and drop on the bellhousing. It was not coming from inside the motor - it was assembly lube. So - don't jump to any conclusions - find out for sure before you cry wolf.

Hummm interesting. I have an 04 with 21k and it's still leaking around the bellhousing and it sure looks like a "rear main" issue to me also. It's not pouring out nor puddling, but it's always damp around the bottom of the bellhousing. But if you say it's assembly lube, well I'll just be patient and not cry wolf either... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I went through this with my 03. At 600 miles, I noticed a stain at the bottom of the bell housing/rubber grommet. From the forum, I was made aware of the assembly lube situation. I waited until 3k, cleaning it up regurally. I went to the dealer for an oil change and reported it. The dealer looked at it and said it was assembly lube. I had my doubts. At 3500 miles I asked to have dye added to the oil and drove for about 400 more miles. It was not assembly lube, it was engine oil and after the dealer changed the rear main 4 times, twice under the direction of a hot shot Ford engineeer, I now drive a great 05 as a result of a Ford buyback. In fact, I own 4 and will pick up an 06 on Wed.) You may very well have assembly lube. Each of my 05's exhibited a wet looking bell housing for the first 3k or so. Never a drip however, so keep your eye on it and ask that dye be added to your oil for verification. Tod date, my 05's have been trouble and leak free.

Are those dime/quarter size drops dripping on ground or just hangin on bottom of BH? As mentioned, mine also early on, only had the hangin drip. Never saw it hit the ground. Still did it @ 14K mi. Could it have been ass. lube, apparently not.

Recently in under warr. first time. Dye/light test indicated RMS was leaking. New one installed. Long story/short, had some minor issues on my "to do" list before 3/36 expired. Point is, if not a real dripper, you might wanna wait awhile longer before going in. You might get recall for other repairs? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif Did you make mistake, only time will tell?

Good luck...OT

At 10,000 mine is showing less and less of stain. If you are at all concerned have dealer put dye in motor - then you will know for sure if you have a leaky motor. If dye does not show up on outside of motor, then you do not have a leaky motor and should not worry.

There have been some rear main leaks, but most of the bellhousing stains have turned out not to be leaking motors. Mine runs like a champ and I have never had to add a drop of oil or noticed any drop in oil level between oil changes. Even if the stain continues, I am not going to worry because I know my motor is tight.

I got the truck back today. They said it looked like assembly lube but they put dye in just in case and told me to bring it back in 500 miles. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
