We travel all over the country pulling our fifth wheel.

What kind of things can I be prepared for so I don't get stranded somewhere? I carry extra filters, belt, hoses, cps and a complete set of tools.

What are common failures for my "middle-aged" 7.3? ( How long will these engines last anyway?)(this is my first diesel)

I've already replaced the water pump at 100k- put in coolant filter at that time.

Since you have extra hoses might want to carry some antifreeze also.

[/ QUOTE ]i would get a cps (cam position sensor) or two. you can pick them up at any ford dealership they used to be about $85.00 they lowered them about 4 months ago to about $25.00. they have a bad habit of going bad.

CPS is listed right before complete set of tools.

Also fuses for everything, especially trailer fuses.

A long time Ford Dealership mechanic, friend, and 7.3 owner told me to carry the CPS, and Ford has an Oring kit with the Orings for the HPOP etc. Add the tool to separate the snap tite fittings for the oil lines. Sounds like you have the reasonable stuff covered.

As PROGAS said, "O Rings", especially the two in the fuel filter drain valve. I just replaced mine again two weeks ago so at this rate I am good for another 80K or so.
If they do start leaking you can remove them and turn them around for a short fix in an emergency but don't expect it to last for too long but should get you through the week.
You can get them from O-Rings Inc in LA 323-343-9500, you want the
-202 V75 which are .50 each.

Click on the Buy Online button on the top of the page the select FKM Viton 75 Black and scroll down to 202

It takes about 20 minutes to replace them. The valve is held on with four T-20 Torks screws which are best removed using a little ratchet made by Husky that I got at Sears. It has a 1/4" drive socket on one end and a hex opening on the other that you can insert a Torks tip into.
You will want to remove the hose from the valve which is easier to do by backing out the 10mm bolt in the front of the engine about 3/4 of the way which will give you some slack in the drain tube.

Hpop is the High Pressure Oil Pump... the pump take motor oil and pumps up the pressure around 3000+ PSI to drive your Injectors....

One of the trucks in our fleet has over 430K on it... just replaced the fuel pump, the CPS and the turbo....

A package of gasket material. It will fit in your tool box and you can manufacture any gasket that may you need.

Ok, so if I get the HPOP oring kit, is there a thread that can show me how to replace them?

I did replace the drain valve orings last fall. I was in a pinch and used regular rubber ones from the hardware store. No leaks, but I carry spare nitrile orings with me as well...

Two wheel drive truck, need to update sig.
