A local used car dealer has a 1989 F350 super cap with 38,000 miles listed at $11,600. Its a super clean truck, one owner, and other than some paint chipping appears to be in great shape. What should this truck be worth? Also what effect is all that sitting going to have on the truck in the long run as far as maintanence. Thanks. Oh by the way the truck is located in North Alabama.

First thing I would want is a Carfax report. Then a whole lot of maintenace/ownership info as to why it sat for so long which proves without a doubt that mileage. Odometers can be changed to suit the occasion.

that truck more likely has 136,000 even 236,000...
I would guess that truck in perfect condition is worth $2,500-$3,500
I wouldn't pay anymore.

old truck still have parts that break, milage or no.
we have a 94 saturn which had 38,000 true miles when we bought it last year. couldn't pass it up for less than $2,000. Anyway, parts still break, things still crack etc.

I disagree...if that (diesel) truck had 136,000 and is extreamly clean and original it's a +5K truck alllll day long! If by some odd chance it actually has ONLY 36K on it...and it is possable...I want it! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Heck at the one IDI rally I went to several told me because my truck was all original and in mint one owner condition it was worth over 7 or a tad better.

I believe thats 138,000 miles also. I payed 4500 for my truck its a little high but I figured how often do you find trucks in that condition. It had 100,000 on it and was in mint condition the interior looked showroom and the paint only had probably 3 or 4 chips 1/4 the size of a pea. I think that truck could have that many miles and be in that condition but not worth that price.

i paid $3k for mine and I thought it was too much.... but it was what i needed, so, ohh well.

hammerdown, what someone tells you they are willing to pay is different than someone giving you that money for that truck.

With one owner, this truck should come with repair receipts. Way too much money for a truck that old. Often funny how much a dealer can tell you about a truck and then not produce the receipts to back it up.

I went to look at a truck in Livermore (1 hour drive), dealer said it was his "daily driver", serviced regularly. The asking price was very high, but I thought it might be worth it. The truck was super clean inside and out. The funny thing was the front grill was from a newer Ford truck and the pinstripes were missing all along the right side. When I asked him what happened, he shrugged his shoulders and said "auh doh no". Turns out his "daily driver" was owned by him for only 18 months.

I bought my truck from the second owner, he sold it after he bought a Power joke. I got it for $5700 in August 2001 with 133K. Trucks in decent shape are expensive in CA.

My wife and I totally love our truck,

I paid more than that for mine, with more miles on it.

Asking price was $7700. Talked him down to $7k.

It's all a matter of what's available and how much someone's willing to pay. For me, I needed a truck that was in good shape on a rather immediate basis and didn't have time to shop due to work responsibilities. My boss was not amenable to me taking time off work to car shop, and a professional development course took most of my time on the weekends. Anyway... at more than 1/4 the price of a new one... still can't complain.

Even with the upgrades I've done, including the turbo and new Brian's Truck Shop transmission, I've only approached 1/3 the price of a new one and still have a reliable machine that I can travel with...

Two things, FIrst, Thats what HE said about his own truck,
Second, You have to see his truck to appreicate it. It is absoultly beuatiful, and it Would sell for 7K, No problem.

Heck I sold a 85 F250 Ex Cab 4x4 one owner truck, pretty clean, but not spotless for $5,500, and had 2 people in line to buy it.

THese trucks hold there value, and using KBB, or NADA is really worthless to determine thier value. You have to take everything into consideration, Miles, Condition, Extras (turbo, Dverdrive etc), Ex Cab, CC, 4x4, Dually XLT etc. Then do a search on what trucks like that are actually selling for. Check E-Bay on items that have allredy been sold, check Traderonline.com to see what is for sale.

With this truck it is hard to tell because all we know is that it is an ex-cab with low miles. Is it a 4x4? XLT? Turbo?, Color? Is everything operational? etc.

As far as the miles go, It could easily be over 100K, and that would make sence, however, if it is actual miles, the things to look at would be that brake pedal, is it wore out, or does it look like new? How is the seat, is it all broken down from getting in and out? How does the undercarrage of the truck look? Oil leaks from the major componants? Seepage? or is it dry as a bone?

As far as the price, Is it worth $11,600 all things considered? My gut would be probablly not, but if you are considering buying a new one for 35K and this one will do the same thing for you at 1/3 the cost, then it is not bad.
I would say around the 10K range for any classic low mileage IDI is about top dollar.

but hey, what do I know, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanks Darrin, and I recall you were one of several that suggested the # I mentioned. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'd agree. 1/3 the price for a capable truck is GREAT... IF it is in great shape mechanically.

The longer I've owned the truck, the more I enjoy doing things to it. Its replacement value far exceeds the money I'll ever get back out of it.

The only thing that concerns me is that in the event of a total loss, insurance won't give me fair value. Of course losing the truck, with all the effort I've put into it, would be a "not good" experience. I'd have to replace her with another '87-'91 IDI--except I couldn't handle the expense of doing the front end on another truck, adding turbo, and doing a BTS trans...
