I have a question about the exhaust on my truck. It has an aftermarket down pipe but is stock from there on. Shoulder I replace the particle filter, it has almost 290k on it. It doesn't seem to tow like it used to, but no definite problems. I have no EGT gauge so I don't know if its heating up or not. Thanks. Trevor.

I also was wondering if a drop-in K&N filter is a good idea, is it that much better than stock. I just have a hard time spending a lot of money on a cold air intake. thanks.

A clogged "cat" can cause problems. (Please read the Forum rules and you'll see why discussions about deleting or gutting the cat aren't appropriate).

A replacement air intake is a great mod. Many folks prefer a pleated element filter over the K&N. Call Dale at Tymar (I think it's 509-922-8785) and he'll set you up with a good system for a tad over $100. Flows much better than stock and filters better too. The stock lid is prone to leaking dirt in, so the Tymar system is well worth it IMHO.

you might check your exhaust back pressure valve which bolts on after your turbo. those tend to like to stick closed which hurts your performance. if it is stuck closed, might be because there is a small steel tube that runs from the front of your pass. side exhaust manifold to your exhaust back pressure valve which mounts just in front of the glow plug relay, this tube can get plugged full of carbon build-up which gives the sensor a bad reading which causes it to close the ebpv when it should be open.

I was looking at sdan27's mods and saw that you have electric fans, did that make any difference in power/fuel economy?

it totally made a difference in power. just driving around town during the summer it would be hard pulling out into traffic because if my fan was engaged it seemed it would kill my acceleration. i just found some individual 15" or 16" fans online. they had a little better than 2000 cfm i think. i took the fan shroud off and made up a bracket to hang where the fan shrouud bolts used to go. i got a fan relay switch through an auto parts store and also wired in a switch in the cab so i could turn them on whenever i wanted. usually my thermostat does a good enough job of controlling temperature that the only my truck ever seems to warm up is when it's sitting and idling for along time in the summer months. hope that gives you some ideas.
