Hello so I recently bought a 1997 f350 4x4 crew cab. It came with a miss/stumble at more than 1500RPM. The people that I bought it from had it sitting for a while. When they started using it again it ran fine for a while but then the fuel pump started leaking and it would not start. So they took it to a mechanic and had him replace the fuel pump he said it also needed a new injector on the 3rd cylinder. After they replaced those parts it had the stumble above 1500 RPM. I am going to get a compression gauge and check the compression and the fuel pressure at the fuel pump. Any other ideas of things to check are appreciated.

Just for giggles, try unplugging the icp sensor.

I dont Know if it makes a difference. But I noticed that when the truck revs to where it starts stumbling. If I stand next to the exhaust it does not sound like a misfire, it sounds like the engine stops then starts again very quickly. I also removed the air cleaner pipe to the turbo and it has quit a bit of blow by. Any advise would be great thanks

You need to watch some live data.

So I did a compression test today. The truck was cold and I did not remove the oil from around the glow plugs before I took them out. I used the harbor freight 1000psi gauge with a homemade oil hose adaptor.

The results

1 295

2 300

3 290

4 285

5 275

6 305

7 295

8 285

this seems really low. Is it possible that the engine is just worn out at 304,000 miles?

So. I had the same thing and it was a bad injector harness. Bought two cheap ones from AutoZone. Same problem. Turned out one of the new harnesses had a loose connection. Spend the extra money and by Ford. Solved my problem. Hope this helps.

The pressures seem pretty consistent, I would expect one or two to be very low if the engine was worn out. Keep looking I would suspect harness.

Okay thanks. I was looking at the harness that where on the truck. They are not original they look new and they are a cheap brand. Do you think that the shop possibly replaced old ones with a set that was bad out of the package, when they did the injector?

thanks

I got a set of OEM valve cover gaskets from a wrecking yard. I put them on but it still has the same issue? should I replace the full engine harness now?

thanks Nathan

It might be a cam position sensor. Mine was intermittent before it died completely.

It seems like it was something that the mechanic did. Because the truck was running fine before they replaced the fuel pump and injector. when we drove it home it seemed like the further we drove the less It stumbled. It never stumbled once for the last 8 miles home. But in the morning after it had cooled off it was just as bad as before.

thank Nathan

Did the article not have any of those instructions?
The only other way I know, is swap it to another truck.

Yes you can get a bad harness out of the package. I did. The connections under the cover can come loose too.
I would check that connection where the mechanic replaced the injector too

I tested the ohms today and all the injector wires where at 2.9 or 3.0 ohms. But when I tested the 2 power feed wires the ohm tester would not do show anything? Also when I removed the plug from the IDM there was white corrosion on all the connector pins.

Thanks Nathan

The valve cover harness are used OEM ones from the wrecking yard. I did check all the connections on the harness and injectors to see if any where loos. If the mechanic did put the injector in wrong would that be causing the issue that I have?
