I have a 1997 F350 7.3L diesel that just recently fails to start after sitting even over night. The Ford dealer identified the problem as a leaking check valve integral to the HPOP reservoir. It is now at the dealer awaiting a new reservoir, however they say that Ford no longer makes the part (that is specific to the 1997's), and they are having trouble locating a replacement. They are now looking at core motors to pull a replacement. Is there another solution? Anything after market? Thanks.

Reservoir Leak Problem Resolved

After not being able to locate the discontinued reservoir part for a 1997 7.3L, the Ford garage working on my truck, finally decided to take it apart and find out what the problem was. It turned out to be the HPOP. They are replacing the pump and regulator valve. Should be running 'good as new' in a couple of days.

It turns out that the reservoir in the 1997 only has a stand pipe to maintain the level. No repairable parts. Probably why it's discontinued. They said that their books were showing it wrong.

The only symptom that I had with this, other than total failure due to no fuel because no injectors the last time I tried to start it, was that I had been noticing a slight stumble before startup when hot (it started immediately when cold). I hadn’t really thought too much about it, other than ‘it didn’t used to start like that’.

Repair vs aftermarket pump

It was only $2k and nearly 2 weeks. What a deal! At least I have the thing back, and now know that the oil reservoir is a non-issue. Some lessons are expensive. I took it there initially because I was certain that it was the cam sensor (recently replaced on recall). The symptoms are very similar. I just didn't crank it long enough before I had it towed.
