Yeah, I'll say, makes my expedition with 5.4L look like a toy. I read a humorous article about it that I wish I still had to post. One of the jokes went something like "NASA is going to take some pictures for me on the next shuttle mission, as my new Excursion will be one of the first trucks visible from outerspace."

I work in the auto industry. Parked my E350 Club Wagon next to an Excursion the other day. My van is longer, taller, just as wide. And it also has the PSD.

To FastD:

Are you sure about those comparisons? In an article I read about two months ago some guy from Ford said it was the "largest" vehicle they will be making, longer than a long bed SD, and taller than any vehicle when the air suspension rises for 4 Low. I would think the width would be nearly the same though.

The Excursion is 19' long if I remember correctly. That is 3' shorter than my truck.

About the Height thing, it is going to be close...

Have any of you seen those Gladiator conversions of F-350's? They have the third seat plus storage, just like a Suburban. I have seen some used ones advertised for sale in Iowa but didn't get a chance to go see them. The dealer had two and both were diesels. Until the Excursion that was your only choice for a diesel SUV unless you were willing to replace the injection pump on the GM 6.5 every 60K miles, at a cost of (I believe $1200 + installation).

To me the Excursion makes a lot of sense for a large family that 1. Drives a lot, 2. Needs the extra room, 3. Doesn't want the hassel of trying to work on (or paying someone to work on) an engine that is almost inaccessable (full size vans, see posts from Jim Swartz). My only problem is it is so expensive it costs more than the Suburban, it is over the luxury tax amount, so add 10% to the price.

I would be happy for one with rubber floor, manual windows, etc. as long as it has the PSD and is less than $36,000. (That's assuming you can find a dealer who will order one at, say $500 over invoice, very unlikely.)

What ever happened to the "Super Crew Cab' option on the pickups? That showed up on Ford's "build your own" site but disappeared without explaination. I would think that would have been cheaper than the Excursion, and if you put a topper on the bed you would still have three seats and plenty of cargo space. Likely more cargo space than the Excursion. Maybe Ford dropped it so it wouldn't hurt Excursion sales.

I am real sure about the dimensions. I have driven many of them. They are simply the same length as a Long Bed Super Cab SD. They are big, but I think the whole thing is getting to be like the bigger fish story. They are a nice truck though. As for height, no way is it taller than the Van.

I read that it's going to be 20' long or so, but it will be shorter than the SuperCab trucks (long bed), let alone the CrewCab ones.

How have you driven many of them if they haven't even come out yet? I have an article right in front of me that says the Excursion is 7.2 inches longer,3.3 inches wider, and between 4.3 and 5.8 inches taller than a Suburban, which it says was the biggest SUV available. It says it is less than 20ft long so that it will fit in a standard garage. Maybe you are getting confused with the Tahoe size Expedition. Correct me if this is wrong.

No I am not getting confused. I work in the auto industry. I know they are not out yet. I have been working on them for the past two years. Yes, they are the biggest SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) out there. They are bigger than a Suburban. Not as big as a full size van. My E350 is taller, longer, just as wide. The Excursion is an F250 made into an SUV. If you have a Crew Cab Long Bed, your truck is bigger than the Excursion.

We're actually modifying our family financial plan to afford on of these beasts.(beast is an affectionate term around here, right?) The thought of a 20mpg, 9 passenger vehicle with a diesel just gets my wife hot, in a good way
If I can get 10 years out of one it will be cheaper than my wifes Windstar that will totally be used up in 5 years. 2 Windstars @ $30,000 is a lot worse than one Excursion @ $50,000, and I won't be embarrissed to drive it

From Popular Science:

"...the largest SUV on the planet now belongs to Ford."

"...base models should start in the upper 30's and the high end around $50,000."

I am with FastDew. There are those of us on the leading edge who already drive the biggest SUV out there, PSD E350. Carries 12 people. Gets 17 mpg. Crushes rear ends of Toyota Camry's without a dent. Co-workers think you are really cool. Wife adores it. $30K.
KleyP -

RIGHT ON! I had an '94 E350 that stuffed a '93 Cadilac Coupe Deville and drove home. Caddy went to the scrap heep. Van got a new headlight!

Hey does any one know where you can see some pictures / web site of the new beast.

Trailer Life may have pictures on their website. They just did a write up onit. Right now the 2wd are running with twin I-beams and leaf spring for the 4wd. 10K towing capacity w/PSD. But that may change by the time it hits the street. It has a 137" wheelbase.

In my opinion a SUV has to have 4wd. To be the KING of SUV's it has to have diesel (or at least the option).

Take the van to Quigley and you've clearly got the KING. Plus a vehicle with tons of room (and $ leftover) to customize the interior.

It was something I considered, but went with pickup & slide in instead.

RE: long bed quad - No, pickup didn't fit in my garage. So I cut a hole in the back. Framed a lean-to across the rear and now have perfect space for my motorcycle.

Go to the Ford website, they have a few pictures. They will also send you a broucher. I just wish that it was as big as my Crew Cab! I guess I will have to wait until they really do come out with something big.

MSRP for the Excursion starts at $34,135 for the XLT 4X2 to $40,880 for the Limited 4X4. I'm assuming the PSD would be a $4000 option on top of that.

FastD,

Hey just curious since you're in the industry if you could tell us anything about the stretched version of the Excursion due out in 01? I heard it will be about 25 feet long and based on the F350. I guess that must be why I was thinking it will be bigger than most pickups.
