2001 7.3 no start no smoke

give the full story last winter was having hard time starting in less pluged in found out the GPR was replaced it started right up the rest of winter. this year first freeze came in and didn't want to start even pluged in. I tested the GPR and it was working. then ohm the glow plugs and found 5 where out and the pig tails above valve cover are done so I replaced all glow plugs and the pigtails and put back together. now won't start. at first it had white smoke but that stoped pretty fast. now none. changed the cam sensor just to be quick easy fix I hoped but no go. I ohm the glow plugs and the injectors above the valve covers and go 3.0 on injectors and 1.0 on glow plugs. i pulled the icp plug and still won't start i pulled out the ipr and rebuilt with fresh o rings. checked the hpop it's full. when I turn on the key the wts light comes on and off as normal. my rpm on gauge cluster do not move until I tried starting it with either( I did unplug glow plugs) and fired up for a sec but died when I let go of key. I have an edge programmer on it have had it for 4 years never a problem. It shows in its display while cranking IPR% 36-45 ICP ranges from 700-1400 it shows rpm but I don't remember the number. sorry so long just trying to get everything out there that I have checked aND done but I'm leaning to idm?

Didn't see where you checked fuel supply. Since it ran for a second on ether (please don't do that again, even with GP's disabled - it's dangerous), then died, it might be a fuel supply issue.

If it's an IDM, it would show up with a check engine code, or at least if scanned with a PSD capable scan tool.

You're going to need a different scan tool if yours is a parts store generic OBD2 one. The PSD uses an extension of the OBD2 system which can't be read by a generic scanner. A lot of us on here use AutoEnginuity (DTC plug-in connected to a laptop). Even with that you'll need the Ford Enhanced package (~$350).

Depending how cold it gets where you are, i would switch to 5-40 or 10-30 diesel, that would help your truck to start. And might be the problem also

I just had to drop my 2 cents in on the ether...
I had bad glow plugs for near 2 years. Busy life, no time to rip it apart and change them. Got so bad that it would not fire up even at 75 degree temps.
So I hit it with a sniff of ether ...FOR NEAR 2 YEARS..every day, numerous times a day. NO PROBLEMS>
I have since replaced the glow plugs(which was easier than anticipated) and it runs like a champ. Pulls a fully loaded 34' fifth wheel over vail pass at least 8 times this year.
It is a 2001 7.3 f250 with 450k miles.
I would think if the tale that ether will damage the motor was true, I would have proved it.
Unless I have one of those 'special' 7.3's ...

yes I only tried it once just to see if it would start and it was starting fluid said on the can okay to use with diesels but won't be using it again and the rpm on my edge said 100-105 last night ...I took the batteries out last night and rechargeing them before I try again...I took the valve covers back off last night and double checked the connections and did the .50 cent mod since I was there..after work picking up a fuel pressure guage just to cross that out while looking for a good idm.

Check your batteries first, maybe get them load tested. 100-105 rpm is to slow to get the injectors fired. You need 150 rpm. Also check your connection make sure they're tight and clean

I had the batteries tested and are good I made sure post are on tight, I also checked fuel pressure it's at 55-60 psi my voltage didnt drop below 10v while cranking I did only a few short ones trying to save battery life. my rpm guage on the truck still don't move but the edge system topped out at 145 rpm but hung around 135_140 rpm. any ideas lol...thanks for all the help so far much appreciated I have learned alot through this forum.

If I remember correctly, on a 2001 if the RPM doesn't move while cranking, that would indicate bad CPS

that may help you for IDM diagnostic

that's what I thought so I did change out my cps with one from the Ford house (everyone says the autostore ones are crap) and I will get rpms on the edge but not on guage but I did get rpms on the guage when I hit it with starting fluid that one time. the atachment wouldn't load on my phone, will try on the laptop tomorrow. thanks

well after some research and testing with multimeter on the idm I'm not sure it's bad. I am back to thinking something up with the cps and like u said I should be getting movement on the tach but I'm not so I pulled the pcm and checked that the wiring was good and it is and I'm getting .5v vref. could my pcm b bad? I unplugged the cps sensor and cranked on it to see if I could through a code but I have no codes. so really thinking my pcm is not reading the cps.
