Your dad's mechanic is wrong. There's no steering column sensor. The steering system on our trucks is purely hydraulic and mechanical. It could be something to do with the power steering pump system or the steering gear itself. There's a valving system in the steering gear that controls the power assist, and is possibly malfunctioning.
Instead of telling the dealer what part someone thinks you need, have them do a diagnosis on the steering system based on the symptoms you're experiencing.
