My '03 6.0 has recently started stalling under load, whether from towing or just running on the interstate with A/C going in hot weather.
Usually the oil temp gets up to around 205+
First happened when towing heavy uphill but now happens when driving home unladen with A/C
When it stalls, I can pull over and restart right away.
If I sit and high idle a few minutes to bring down temps, such as at the base of a big hill, I can get up the hill before it stalls again.
When it stalls, IPR% is commanded to 85% and ICP is falling off. If I notice and back off, I can often avoid stalling by driving slower and/or turning off the A/C
So it is a stall caused by an intermittent loss of ICP when under load.
I have had failed o-rings a couple times before and fixed it. Also replaced HPOP last year. This is different from those things in that I can restart immediately, so whatever is causing the loss of ICP goes away while the engine is still hot, unlike an o-ring issue.
I have spent hours googling and can't find one quite like this.
My current guesses are, in no particular order:
-failing low pressure oil? The dash gauge will still show good press down to 5-7 psi, so it could be dropping off and I wouldn't know
-bad ipr? I swapped it out with a different unit and same symptoms. The unit I swapped in was on this truck previously and was replaced when I replaced the HPOP. (Last year I had replaced the IPR hoping it was the problem when it was in fact the HPOP)
-bad ipr pigtail? I noticed fraying on pigtail when I replaced HPOP and IPR last year so I replaced the IPR pigtail as well. Maybe i effed up the crimps, or maybe the pigtail is aftermarket and somehow failing when it gets hot under the hood?
Any ideas would be welcome. I have fixed this thing a half dozen times in the last 18 months and have gotten pretty familiar with it but this time it is kicking my butt.
