Ok, so heres the question...forgive my little knowledge of the diesel engine, I'm posting for my boss who doesn't have a computer.

He has a 2004 6.0L F-250 which he uses for work at minimum 5 days a week. The problem is recently at steady interstate speeds (65+, with or without the cruise engaged) it starts jerking pretty harshley and spitting black smoke from the exhaust. Also, when it jerks like this the turbo seems to stop, and then start again. He's been to a couple different dealers and a couple other places and they haven't been any help as of yet. Could it be an injector? Maybe a fuel pump? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

This TSB may cover it:

Flutter Noise on Deceleration:
Some 03-06 trucks may exhibit a fluttering noise from the air filter assambly on deceleration. This is a characteristic of the engine and posses no problems with the engine or turbo. No repair should be attempted. Broadcast Messages 1046, 4818
This condition should be intermittent and typically occurs after a hard acceleration. If the flutter occurs at every deceleration, under load or at upshift on acceleration, suspect a sticking VGTurbo actuator or vane ring.

When my turbo goes bad it farts at every shift and every deceleration, but it really gets going under a load. This is a link to a video of my truck acting up: FTP://Ford:D[email protected]:21

He bought his used at the end of last year, and the mileage throws it out of warranty range. Thanks for the help though, any information might help.

Really? It has over 100K miles on it already?! 'Cause if it doesn't, the problem is almost certainly covered under the Powerstroke engine warranty. The turbo is covered, for instance.

Yes, it has 120k+ I think. I asked him about the warranty today trying to figure out what he could do and he said the mileage put it out of range. So I'm positive it's over 100k, not sure the exact mileage though.

Have the dealer run an OASIS (vehicle history) report on your buddies truck, hopefully the turbo has been replaced before and maybe your friend can persuade them to do a good faith replacement if there have been problms in the past w/ it.

However, it is your turbo for sure. I have an '04 and just got my 3rd turbo in 41,000 miles. The crappy thing is, it took the dealer 10,000 miles to narrow down the problem as it was very intermittent!

Ok guys, thanks a lot. The truck has 114k miles on it just to throw that in. I talked to him a little bit ago, and he said that his turbo just stopped completely. The truck still runs, but it has no "GO". Should he go to a dealer and buy an OEM turbo there, or can you recommend a good aftermarket turbo?
