I have a 2005 Ford F350, 6.0 Diesel with 190,000 miles on it. The last few months I have been having issues with starting the truck when its cold and once driving it a loss of power/shifting issues.

Cold start issues: I have been having issues with starting the truck
when the outside temps are warm but its even more
difficult when temps are cold. When I am having the
issues the truck has been sitting for at least a few
hours if not over night and is completely cooled down.
I will sometimes have to start it 2-3 times as it will
cut off as soon as started in colder temps (40s-50s).
Once started it will lightly smoke and run rough until
up to normal operating temperature.

Lack of Power/Shifting Issue: I have noticed the last few months that
I have been losing power and the truck is shifting rough
sometimes requiring me to feather the throttle. It has lost
enough power to where I have to wait for a 2 mile gap
before pulling out into traffic. When pulling away from a
green light sometimes it seems the truck gets stuck in
gear and I have to feather the throttle to get it to shift.
When this issue is happening I notice the boost gauge is
not moving at all. I do not have this issue all the time,
just majority of the time. When the truck is running well
the boost gage is moving like it should.

Long story short my wife and I dropped the truck off at a local Diesel Shop last week while we were on vacation. The shop reported the information below:

The cold start issues were resolved by replacing 3 of the glo plugs that were apparently bad. The truck starts 100% better now without any issues.

The turbo was suspected by the shop of having stuck vanes and required cleaning. The shop removed the turbo, cleaned it, checked all the boots, y-pipe, connections and everything re-installed everything and still had the same issues. The shop had a turbo laying around that had a bad oil seal but they put it on the truck to see what would happen and the truck ran perfect. The shop told me the turbo will require replacement. Luckily since I know the shop owner I can buy my own parts at discount and take them in and he only charges me the labor. My current issue if what turbo is best for the 2005 6.0 diesel?

I currently have a K&N intake system on the truck and that is it. I would like to replace the intake system, install a 4" turbo back exhaust and do a mild tune. The truck is an every day driver for my wife and pulls our horse trailer to barrel races or rodeos about twice a month. I am currently looking at the 2 turbos below but I am up for all options and suggestions.

The below link is a stock direct Garrett turbo replacement:

Garrett 743250-5024S GT3782VA Stock Replacement Turbocharger

The below link is for the Garrett PowerMax turbo:

Garrett 772441-5002S PowerMax GT3788VA Turbocharger

My only worries about the Garrett PowerMax is not having the exhaust or tune yet and the fact that I most likely wont have the funds for those for a few months. Would it be fine running the PowerMax with everything stock for a while and once I am able to do the tune what would be recommended?

Thanks in advance for any help and let me know if any additional information is needed and I will try to answer the questions.

Sorry for the post! After research I found 94857938 other posts recently about the same issue. Looks like PowerMax it will be with eventually the SCT tuner.

I would also suggest you go back to the stock airbox but research around here on the subject and you can form your own opinion. That new turbo should work out great!
