Hi all,

I am new to the diesel world and just recently bought a 2005 F250 king ranch with the powerstroke diesel. After backing out of the garage today i notice a couple drops of oil on the floor. I took a look underneath the truck and found a little oil on what looked to be the bell housing (not sure what it is). The truck only has 58000 miles on it. My question is how concerned should i be about this? I dont know how much oil its loosing but i suspect not too much. I just hate having to worry about where i park so i dont stain the driveway lol.

Any info on this would be greatly appreciated! thanks in advance

Oil leaks have been fairly common on some trucks. The source of the oil leak is often times hard to find without adding dye to the oil. Most of the oil leaks end up at the bell housing, so you will have to investigate further. You are still under warranty, so I would take it in and have them put in the dye and determine the source for you - unless you want to do that yourself. If you do, you can start with the list below, it is a list of the common leak points. Once you know the source you can decide on whether or not to have it fixed. Personally, I would probably have Ford fix it under warrnty - even if they had to pull the motor (ie for the bedplate) - but choose a dealership with a shop that has a good reputation for having good techs!

CAC Tubes = 21% (CAC is charge air cooler and the source is the ccv system)
ICP Sensor = 16% (Mainly 2003's and some 2004's)
Glow Plug Harness = 14%
Cam/Crank Position Sensor =14%
Front Crankshaft Seal = 8%
Upper to lower block seal (skirt) = 5% (bedplate)http://dan.prxy.org/Truck/6L_bible_html/html/Page_022.html
HPOP cover = 4%
Oil Cooler (this leaks into engine coolant) = 4%
Front or Rear Engine Cover = 3%
Rear Crank Seal = 3%
Turbo Charger & VGT actuator = 2%
Covers (oil pan, valve covers, breather) = 2%
Cracked or Porous Block or Head = 1%
IPR valve/Engine Lube oil pump = <1%

good luck with the oil leak, i have had one since mine was new, truck was at 4 different dealers and theynever did get it fixed. If the turbo quits spooling down and whistling that is when you should worry, whistling sound is a good thing

I can hear the my turbo spool down after engine shut off, as well. Took it to the dealer and one of the mechanics drove it and listened to it. Said everything was fine.

good deal, that makes me feel much better. About the oil leak, i was reading through here and found someone mention a stop leak additive you add to your oil. He seemed to have some success but i couldnt tell if he was putting it in a 6.0 or 7.3. I know the 6.0 is much more picky. Does anyone know if this would hurt a 6.0?

Dont even think about stop leak!:nono: Make FORD fix their crap while you can. Dont let them BS you about spilling oil when you were filling or adding. It may take a couple of days but it is their problem not yours!

been reading your posts about oil leaks and i have a 05 f250 and recently discovered that i have an oil leak that looks like its coming from the back of the intake...its leaking down both sides of the engine. it was leaking really bad once it sat for a week and i started it up and go for a short drive and saw a couple of puddles of oil within minutes of shutting truck down. after running it for a while the leak slowed drastically. my warranty is out anyone got any suggestions?

I recently nad my bedplates fixed under waerranty and every gasket except heads and valve cover was replaced to do the job properly. I went to the ford truck {heavy duty} dealership in Las Vegas and everything is GREAT! Hope I didnt just jinx myself. Your problem sounds like it may be coming from up high like the turbo . Im sure someone will have a sharp reply soon but for now try taking it to the wash to pressure wash all the gunk away, while it is idling,as best you can then use a mirror to inspect. The dealers steam clean before they place the dye in the system. Good luck!

Great info,

Question any of these show signs from top of the engine that are pouring down each side? over a gallon every 100 miles?

If you have an 03 or early 04, the ICP sensor can leak a lot of oil.
