hey guys, seeing if you could help me with a dilemma. Have a 2010 6.4 and changed the fuel filter & seperator today, but did it backwards. Changed the engine mounted one first, then the frame mount. Purged the air 6 times, but the motor will not fire. Cranks fine. I never had any problems with starting with my 6.0 Also have the wrench lit up on the dash display. Does anyone have any tips? Tried to take off the engine mounted filter cap to see if fuel was in there but the cap broke, so i am off to get one. Just trying to get some direction, need my truck for work tomorrow! thanks

Not an expert, but did you check to see if the Fuel Pump Shut-Off Switch needs to be reset. Also the wrench light means you through a code and I’m thinking (guessing) it is a P2291 “injector Control Pressure Too Low”. If an expert doesn’t post some help, try using the “Search Function” on this forum. I seem to have read that if you get too much air in the fuel system, the Key method won’t purge it all out.

Also just wondering where you would buy a new cap on a Sunday?

What was said above are the steps. Key on till you dont hear the pump running. Turn key off. Then back on, repeat at least 6 times. Open passenger front door, side of dash is the fuel cutoff switch in the little door, depress and crank and see if that helps.

thanks for all the info. Read on a post somewhere that a guy picked up a new cap at O'reillys, just thought i would give it a shot since i wanted to continue to try to get the truck running today. Guess i'll have to go to dealer in morning to pick one up. Really no updates for you guys since i don't have a cap, but i'll put the new top on tomm and try the cycling with the key and the full shut off button. I'll post tomm, running or not. thanks

I speak from experience. You probably have it air locked. There is a schrader valve (tire valve looking thing) on top of the engine. Bleed the air and it should start up.

ok guys, got home a little while ago with the new filter cap, let the fuel pump run about 8 times, drained the air out of strater valve, and she fired up. idled rough for about 8 or so minutes, the perfectly. Problem is, i took it for a drive, and the truck has no power, only to about 2200rpms, the the motor starts coughing unless i get of the throttle. almost like the limp mode is on, but there are no lights on the dash and the wrench light went out as well. Any ideas?

Residual air in the system is my guess.

Go drain the fuel/water separator as a pre-caution.

It might also still be in limp mode, wrench light should be on but one never knows.

Mine did the same thing last filter change. The wrench flashed and it ran rough for a second or two. I had to purge the system a dozen times to get the air out. I never had the reduced power issue.

got it running great now. thanks for all the help guys, really appreciate it. I let it run in the driveway for about 15 minutes or so, shut it down, started it, and now no power lag. I agree, that there must have been still air in the lines, and drained the seperator. A lot of trouble, but at least i know how to do it next time. thanks!

Glad to here your up and running, thanks for the update.

Just a little info!! When your truck is in “Limp Home Mode” it might not give you lights or the wrench light, but the PCM will disable Cruise Control. My EGR valve was screwing up and went into “Limp Home Mode”; I lost my Cruise Control and knew that I was in LHM.

Had the green tool after fuel filter change. Didn't turn the key on six times for 30 seconds as required, I might have done three. So I went back out and turned it on ten times it started and died, so I did it again another eight times it started and continued to run. Hope this helps.
