Just returned from extensive vacation up north and west, towing a 12K-lb 5th wheel. About half way, the fuel pump (I assume) started "growling" during a long day, and thereafter as soon as I had the switch in START - I can't remember if the pump is ON with the switch in ACCesories. Can someone remind me that the pump is DC hot battery, and does come ON in START? It was so noisy that I could hear it over traffic and other road noise sometimes, and I feared the worst. It persisted most of the last half of the trip, at various levels of noise. Now, after setting in the north TX heat for a week, there is no such noise at any time - yet. I'll tow again soon, but probably not for several hours a day (and rarely turning OFF the engine, due to hi-idle mod) like during the vacation. If I can't get it to "speak up", is there any chance the techs will be able to find a problem? I would have changed fuel filters as soon as it appeared, but I wanted to duplicate the problem here at home with the present filters.

I know a truck doing the same thing and changing the fuel filters didn't help it, so don't let your dealer tell you that. His makes that noise sometimes for days and then somedays if wont make a sound. I don't get it. I know on superdutys from atleast 99 the fuel pump runs when the key is on the truck doesn't have to be running. If you read your manual your supposed to turn your key forward 6 times and set for 30 seconds for your fuel system to prime itself. It's also great if you ever run out of diesel because if don't take long to start and you dont have to bleed any lines.

Mine went out just under five months and 5,000 miles. I heard a high pitch whine that became more consistent and louder over a few weeks. This happened whether I was towing or not. Ford replaced it without question. The truck is now 13 months old with 15,000 miles and no other problems.

Did your fuel pump noise persist and was obvious when taking it in for repair? In other words, was the noise continuous until repaired? As mnetioned above, my high pitch noise was at various levels, mostly while towing, and at times was so loud I feared the worst. There was noise when not towing, also, but not at such high levels. I can't figure why towing was the reason. But, now the noise is gone. Anyone guess if there is damage to the fuel pump and it would be replaced under warranty?

Mine did the same thing this morning. I shut the truck off and restarted it and it is gone. I pulled my 5th wheel this past weekend while it was 105 - 109 outside. I am at 9800 miles. Wonder if I should replace the fuel filters at 10k with my oil change?

Jascott; Your case sounds exactly like mine! I pulled my 5th wheel RV through north TX with truck temp gauge reporting at least 110 degF and higher as I went north and west. And then the noise started, and continued most of the way north and west even at nice cool temp like 50 degF in OR, WA and BC. I'll tow again next week when the temp should be 102-104 degF, and see if it repeats. I have a full load of fuel that has been soaking in the heat, I'll do my best to duplicate the problem. I wonder if high temp is a common thread - where's FORD Customer Service Cory when you need him?

Was the sound constant for everyone or would you hear it more at a higher speed?

I'm getting a slight whine drivers side sounds like right in front of the windshield and it gets bad at around 60-70mph.

As mentioned, I just returned from a short towing trip, 1 hour each way, in 110 degF temp in the DFW metroplex. I checked for fuel pump "whine" and heard it at a very low level after towing - but, nothing when not towing in these high temps. I do believe it may be temperature related, and definitely due to towing (my trip up north and west when it started was about 5000 miles of towing). I'm thinking that if I take it to Ford dealer, the tech will not hear my complaint/the noise, or replace the pump. I have 15K miles now, and will replace the fuel filters and prepare for the next (hot) tow in a couple weeks. Any thoughts?

The sound was constant, but went away after I stopped and restarted a few hours later.

I was towing a few days earlier, and had traveled several hundred miles after towing before I heard the noise. I had right at 10k on the truck, so I went ahead and changed the fuel filters. The frame filter was medium brown color. I haven't heard the noise since in a few hours driving... No towing though.

I have a f350 and i pull about 7K behind me every week. I got it in Novermber and now have 54k miles. Just had the Turbo replaced. But resently did a bonheaded move and filled up with GAS!!!! Didn't start the truck had the tank drained and cleaned, but this passt weekend noticed a slight drone from the fuel pump. not sure if its related to the gasoline or not, but it does have a whine that i didn't hear before....or at leasted noticed. I guess what I'm asking is is the whin you are hear very noticable or is it that you know your truck so well that any different sound it makes you hear it?
