The weather has been cooperative lately and so I decided to install my front axle Mag-Hytec cover. The truck has a little over 9,000 miles on it, but only about 500 on the front axle (4WD). Nothing unexpected was found and the oil was only slightly gray. Five quarts of Amsoil 75W-110 were installed (which is two more than the stock cover would allow). The wear pattern on the ring gear looks fine indicating that Ford did a good job of setting up the axle. This is a Dana Super 60 9.75" differential with a 3.55 ratio. The next project is to install the Amsoil Bypass system and the oil pressure, rear axle and front axle temperature gauges.

Enjoy!

Nice! Can't go wrong with larger capacity. Curious on the lube choice though, these are what, 80/90 GL5 mineral oil factory fill, is this 75/110 full syn a designed replacement by amsoil, is it an ambient temp decision?

Some years ago, the J300 ratings changed and 75W-110 is what 75W-90 was before the change. I will put a few hundred miles a year on the front axle in 4WD (usually towing) and sometimes in 110F heat so I want the extra protection of 75W-110 versus 75W-90. I ran this in the F150 that this F250 replaced with great results.

On a separate note, does anyone know if the ring and pinion gear turns on the front differential when NOT in 4WD?

What about when the hubs are in automatic? I just want to be sure I understand the function.

When in auto and TC in 2wd, hubs will unlock. Best way to make sure is crank the wheel side to side and rotate the u joint in the hub, if it turns freely it's unlocked. The hubs stick sometimes and take a while to unlock, sometimes they need to be torn down, cleaned and lubed.

Great pics 2015_PSD. I know this is a late response, but I just found your post with a search. I'm doing all I can to set up my truck for pulling a heavy trailer, sometimes in the mountains, and I was thinking differential covers, and trannie pan. I know these aftermarket covers allow for more fluid, but do you know if the fins help with cooling the oil?

Yes, they do. The fins increase the surface area over which the air can flow. The issue has always been--how much cooling? For me, it is the extra capacity and the ease of maintenance that has driven me to replace these covers. I have used these since 2010 on my F-150 and have been very pleased with them. Shop around online and you can find them at a good discount. I can also state that Mag-Hytec's customer support has been supreme. I asked them how to order a set of replacement o-rings and they shipped them out at no cost.
