As you can see from my updated signature, I just purchased a new 2016 F450. Love the truck, although I was surprised that the tires that came on this one were all Continental HSR's rather than the HDR's that came on the rear and HSR's that came on the front of my 2008 F450. Does anyone have any experience with the HSR's on the rear in snow?
Thanks much!

Maybe I should ask this a different way...

Does anyone own a 2015 or 2016 F450 Pickup and if so, can you tell me if it came with Continental 225/70R19.5 HSR tires in both the Drive and Steer Position or did it have HDR's in the Drive position?

Thanks much!

My '15 F-450 came with Continental HSR's front and rear. The '08 F-450 pickup I used to have had HSR's up front and HDR's in the rear. I don't believe the HDR's provided much extra traction and they were a lot noisier. I'm pleased with the HSR's so far. I know when I ordered the '15 that there was no option for rear traction tires like there was when I ordered the '08.

I have the HSR's all around. They are useless in the snow! I am looking at the Michelin XDS2 as a winter use tire but it is expensive to buy 6

Thanks guys... it would appear that Ford has gone to all HSR's for some reason... My gut would say $'s... I had sent a PM to Crystal but she claimed to have no idea... told me to contact the dealer which I told her that I had already done. The dealer was clueless about why the change, and indicated that all of their other F450's on the lot had HSR's on them all the way around too. Their Chassis cabs though had HDR's in the rears.

I'm not sure that the HDR's were great in the snow either... but it was a known entity to me... I knew their shortcomings as far as traction, and although not great, were manageable. I'm getting ready to take a long trip south pulling my 5th wheel from the North (and will probably hit snow coming or going) and didn't know if I wanted to gamble with the HSR's or go throw down another $1,500 to buy 4 HDR's... and like Scottb NY, sure don't want to plunk down the cash for 6 new ones! It appears JESSE 1 indicates not much difference in the traction so now I'm really scratching my head...

Any other folks have experience with Both tires?

Thanks everyone!

If you do upgrade Continenal has a new tire out that I believe is even more traction orientated then the HDR and still have the speed ratings. There was a good discussion on here regarding 19.5s and tire options for traction and I believe it got moved the the wheels/tires section.

Thanks Sportscraft. Yes good post. Wish Hoseclamp would have given a review of the Toyo's once he put them on... Didn't see any post from him after the one where he finally had them mounted. Maybe he got snowed in up in the great white north! HA!

I went to Continental's website to look at the HD3s, but it doesn't appear that they make them in the 225/70R 19.5 size though...

Back in 08-10, the tire was a dealer selected option, or if a special order, a customer selected no price change opton. If the same is true today, it is no wonder that all vehicles on a dealer lot have the same tires. Back in 08-10, what tires were on the truck depended on the weather expected at selling dealer locations, and the buyer's knowledge - all 6 steering, all 6 traction, or 2 steering with 4 traction on the rear.

Along came the 2011-2014 350's that were re-badged as 450's and only came with LT all season tires. In the interim, the dealership may simply have forgotten what 19.5's were all about, and that mixing and matching was possible.

In my experience, most dealers never cared about 19.5s--don't sell them, don't repair them, nothing. Will send you elsewhere. Since the HDs are about $40 more on TireRack, I suspect Ford opted for saving the money.
As to two complete sets on my '09, I could never tell the difference in them for normal driving, and hardly ever ran on snow/ice at all. Not good in mud, for sure.

Update...

So I had a chance to drive the truck in snow with the HSR's in the rear... And my experience was pretty much the same as what ScottB NY indicated above... Not good....

Fortunately, I had a really good dealer and they worked out a deal with their tire vendor to give me credit on the HSR's towards HDR's. Drove them on the snow yesterday and although not stellar by any means, they are MUCH better than the HSR's.

Really had a Great Experience buying this truck from Brondes Ford in Toledo. Can't say enough about them. Highly recommended. I ended up driving down there from the Detroit Metro Area after feeling like I was begging to buy the truck from one of the dealers there.
