So brand new F350 6.7...just rolled 5000 miles and the truck's computer shows oil at 66%?! Is this common? I have never run oil over 5000 miles before and I know in my 7.3 after 5000 miles, the oil is THIN.
Just curious about others experiences...
TIA

In 7.3 I have run Synthetic oil 30,000 miles with a bypass filter 10,000 -15,000 miles without. I don't drive that much now so just change oil once a year no matter what the millage. The new vehicles all seem to have much longer change intervals then back in the day when we did it every 2,000 miles. DENNY

I have a 15 and I never change the oil till the truck says to change it. I only use full synthetic oil and Motorcraft is the only oil I use. There are other oil; out there but you have to research to find what Ford recommends. With Motorcraft i don't research nothing. I get it done at the dealer. Made a friend with the parts guy and he gives me a deal then just go to the Quick Lane and they change the oil. Just tell them the oil is in the back. 13 quarts of oil is a lot of oil and it's a pain to drain and take it to the auto store.

My first oil change was at just short of 10,000 miles. The owner's manual shows an oil change interval of 10,000 miles. I think the truck's computer calculates oil life based on driving conditions and how hard the engine is working, so the oil change interval could vary from one oil change to the next. I plan on changing my truck's oil whenever the maintenance minder says that it is due.

If you think that's a long change interval, look at the specs for the 10 speed transmission. It shows an interval of 150,000 miles. To add to that, the transmission does not even have a dipstick to allow for checking the fluid level. The transmission uses a ULV (Ultra Low Viscosity) fluid, so I can only imagine it's like water running through there. I guess it's all good as long is it keeps working.

Just follow what the information center tells you to do.

But then if you want to change it earlier there is nothing that says that you can't.

However if you have the lifetime oil change from Ford or however long you might have it for they will not change it until it is within a certain percentage of oil life left on the information center.

I have always believed in regular oil change intervals. I know that new oils and motors are different than the old 7.3's, but the same principal is there. Oil is the life blood of the engine, keep it good and healthy. Those computers are great but only you know what you have put you truck through in the current oil change interval. Remember, Ford is not going to give you a free engine once the warrantee is up, so if changing the oil a bit earlier then the computer tells you to makes it go for many more years I feel it is worth every penny. This goes for all my gas or diesel vehicles and equipment.

This is the reason i only use full synthetic oil. I have 5 fords and they all get Motorcraft synthetic oil. Oil is expensive here LOL

I change every 5000, don't care what the computer says.
85% of my miles are towing 17,000lbs.
I am working that motor.

My 7.3 doesn't tell me when it is time to change the oil. However, my 2015 F150 does tell me when to change the oil, and I change it myself with full synthetic oil and motorcraft filter whenever it tells me to do so.

When the computer tells you to change the oil, It wouldn't hurt to get it sent in and analyzed,, If it comes back good then you will have a confidence knowing that it should be just fine For future oil changes $30 well spent!!!
