3 questions here.
1)I need a code reader but not a programmer, who sells a code reader that is not a programmer combo? I dont want to pay for programmer, i have a dp-6 on the way.

2)With OD on at 50-60 mph/ 1700-1800 rpm, tranny shifts up and down real quick. like it does not know what it should do. check engine light comes on. I have had this happen with no load and load 6k. Happens every once in a while not all the time. 50,000 miles. Any ideas? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

3)Any good shops in my area for PSD or anyone that has code scanner and some time for me to stop by and check the codes? PM's welcome.

Thanks for the help, Jim

Good Morning Jim,

Code Reader>>Here in California I can go to the local Autozone and they will loan me a code reader that reads most of the codes generated by our trucks. I understand that there are some codes that can't be read by most code readers. I have to give them my credit card & drives license to take the reader outside, plug it in and read the codes. As I remember, the reader is about $180.00 or so. I don't recall the brand name but has to be "OBD II" compatible.

Odd Shifting>>>I had something similar happen awhile back and it turned out to be the "VSS" (Vehicle Speed Sensor) mounted on the top of the differintial. $25.00 from Ford and about 10 minutes to install. I don't recall the code that was set, the VSS replacement fixed the problem. I suspect that the shifting is the transmission shifting from overdrive back to 3rd gear and then going back into overdrive.

I hope that this helps, others here may have better ideas than I.

Most code readers don't play very well with a PSD. There are a couple out there that folks say work, but if you really want a good diagnostic tool, AutoEnginuity is the ticket. The software and hardware will cost you about $450 delivered (you must have the enhanced Ford version). It will read ALL codes, run onboard diagnostic tests, ie KOEO, KOER, Cylinder contribution, etc, just like Ford does. It also can read real time data on all your sensors and data log them for later scrutiny and or graphing. Several members here have gone this way (including me) and I don't think anyone has been disapointed. There may be other tools out there that will work and are cheaper, but I don't think any have the capabilities of the AE package.

Looking at the other posts "Truck missing when it rains" sounds just like what I am seeing. I guess it could be missing, I just thought the tranny jumped up and down a gear, This is my first automatic so i dont have much experience with them. It was raining 3 of the 4 times this happened to me.
Guess I need to put a new CPS in my glove box just in case this is the issue.
Im going to try and have the code read still, hopefully it will still be there when I am able to get it checked.
Im not convinced the CPS is the problem but from the posts it sounds like what I have been experiencing.

I would post this question on the colorado powerstroke clubs site...http://www.coloradopowerstrokeclub.com/index.php . There should be several people and shops down in your area that would be more than willing to let you use there scanners.

Our trucks don't have to comply with OBDII standards that's why most code readers don't work. Wemay have a port, but it's still OBDI that's being used because of our rating as a heavy duty truck.
