Quick question for you guy. Do you tend to abide by the manufacture suggestion for transmission service? At 30K it is suggested that I do this. Now I only tow 4K lbs about 10 times a year which is next to nothing for this ride. As for daily driving I do about 65 miles at speeds up to 65. Just curious is I should make sure to have this service at 30K or if I can stretch it to 40K. Thanks in advance

I keep the maintenace schedule. At 30 K the trans fluid has gone through a lot and should be changed.

I've got a manual trans, but if I did have the torqueshift, I'd say it depends. If the fluid looks / smells good, at 30k, I'd drop the pan, wipe out the internal screen, change the external filter and refill with +/-8qts of MERCON SP. Then at 60k, I'd take it in and have it flushed.

Some guys like to do an every 15k service, where they do the pan & external filter every 15k, and never flush. They figure that they are continually adding fresh fluid at 15k so by the time 60k comes, they've pretty much swapped out the old stuff.

Bigjwalt I let mine go to 36k before I changed the fluid and both filters. Our Excursion doesn't tow anything and the little filter was abosolutely nasty. Get you a case of Mercon V, filters, I chose to get an aluminum pan too with a drain, fins and more capacity.

Hmmmmmmmmm
Make sure its Mercron SP not Mercron V for the torqueshift tranny.

I agree follow the schedule. If you ever have a problem with your transmission down the road, no pun there, you don't want to give Ford any reason to deny your claim if still under warranty. I just changed mine using Mercron SP and Factory filters from Ford. I'm lucky I have a good connection at the Parts counter and get employee pricing. I was able to change mine at a Quick Lube, after hours, but still had a receipt printed out with truck mileage and stapled all receipts to it and in the file it goes. My record if ever I need it. Hope this helps

I changed the external filter and dropped the 8 qts. of Mercon, then refilled at little over 30K.

We've got 30,000 miles on our 2005.
It is used 65/35 for towing, {20,000gcw}, our travel trailer.
We've had trans fluid changed/flushed? each 10,000 miles.
You can't overmaintain a vehicle.
Cheap insurance!

You CAN overmaintain a vehicle, and cause problems in the process. It no longer becomes "cheap insurance", but an expensive waste of money.

Why do you waste perfectly good fluids? How often have you changed the differentials? Do you do your coolant every 30k, whether it needs it or not? Do you buy new tires every 15k, just because they could wear out & maybe cause an accident? Oh yeah, how about your brake fluid? 30k - its due. You might want to have those brakes done while you're at it - they could go any second.

If you are REALLY concerned about your vehicle, use the manufacturer's "extreme service" intervals. Otherwise you're wasting money. But hey - its your money, and you're making some happy spending it.
