i wanna purchase my own exhaust pieces and then take it to a shop to be welded on. a few questions. what are you guys doing for exhaust hangers? using old ones and cutting them off the old pipe? are you using or purchasing new ones or are the shops putting them on for you?
i would do it all myself but welderless right now. i cant wait to be close to dads large(very very large i should say) tool supply again.
also 4" or 5"? i plan to do bigger injectors maybe next year but for the time being will be doing other things like exhaust. and tie rods /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/vomit.gif$$$$$
i saw a post made by quadzilla about where to buy the stuff air flow systems but unsure of what to do for the over the axle as i want it to exit stock location? did you use some 45's and 90's?
also no muffler going on here just pipe. long but needed somne clarifying on a few things. so many posts on so many things but some just dont include all the details and leaves you wondering thanks ryan /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

I ended up using 5", with stock suspension and a B&W gooseneck hitch, it fit fine. I shrunk down a 4-5" bell to fit over the 3.5"ID end of my DP, then used straight 5" pipe back to a Donaldson shorty truck muffler (every little [email protected]$%^^ podunk burg in CO has a noise ordinance, and it's a major cash cow for 'em /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif). The muffler ended right at the axle, and I went 5" ID-OD 45 elbow - 5" ID-OD short radius 90 - 5" ID-OD 45 - 5" ID-OD 45 - short piece of 5" pipe. That humped it up over the axle, back down, leveled out, and then angled out in front of the bumper. It worked fine, but I think there's a 5" tailpipe for a late '90's van out there that does the same thing for less money and fewer joints.

For hangers, I modified the original ones to work, just using long 3/8" bolts out from the frame and shorter 3/8" bolts welded to the muffler clamps I was using to hold the muffler on, and some other creative work with rod stock welded to the pipe. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif So far, so good, it hasn't fallen off yet and it doesn't rattle.

I am totally happy with 4" though I also have a muffler, and it still screams when you get on it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

As far as the performance advantage of the 5" over 4, the difference is pretty much negligible. I think it was something like 4% extra useful air flow, basically that it just came down to what you want as far as sound. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif 4" should be plenty even with injectors. I think many here who have Stage II's are running 4" without any issues.

Yep, Ryan's right, everybody I've talked to says the flow rating of a 4" system is plenty, it's all about sound. Most of the 4" ones that I've heard still had some flutter, that's what I was trying to get away from - the 5" is a lot more mellow.

Alls I got to say is. . . 5 inch stacks! I had a 4" single coming outta the stock location, and that was ok, but the stacks sound sooooo schweet! And I have noticed that it makes an extra 2-3lbs of boost at CERTAIN times(upper RPM range). I need to update my webshots with some stack pics too.

All the pieces you'd need, including the tailpipe, are available through Airflow. I went with the 5" system because I wanted a deeper sound, but there's no appreciable difference in performance, unless you're putting out 500hp. The part number for the 4" over-the-axle tailpipe is FTP4000. For the 5", it's FTP5000.
If I remember correctly, I paid about $130 for the 5" tailpipe. Though a few places offer it for less, I didn't have to have it shipped. I used to work within two miles of Airflow in Tukwila, WA.
On hangers, the place that welded mine together made up some from some rod he had.

I put 5" on mine and when I first got it, and said "holy Sh!!" "that stuff is big".

But now I look at it and say "man that looks small", "I wonder if I can get anything any bigger under there". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

5" sounds great with a muffler.

Well put Clete as you said when I first put the 5" on I couldn't believe how big it looked! Now it looks like I need bigger! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I may either go with stacks or put some 6" on next. But back on topic I love the sound of my 5" straightpipe! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif http://community.webshots.com/photo/250456685/330715244jjXReC
