A buddy of mine was hauling his fifth wheel home behind his 2000 F250 (which used to belong to me). I didn't get any details about how it failed, just that he "blew his trans". My brother is on his way as I type this to "rescue" him and get his trailer home.
He has a temp gauge (I know because I installed it when the truck was mine) but he's not the type to watch it carefully. Anyway, in case it needs rebuilding/replacing, I would like to recommend to him that he replace it with one of the aftermarket transmissions that are built-up - particulary for towing, if there is such a beast.
I've been out of the Ford market for a couple of years - so I've lost touch with who does what the best. Which aftermarket vendor would be most suitable to heavy towing? I see ATS is still at it. There was a place in Arkansas that rebuilt them, but I don't recall the name (just found it - BTS Brian's Truck Shop).
The truck runs a PPIII but he drives it like an old lady - so racing isn't an issue. However, he tows a pretty heavy 5er and I wouldn't be surprised if he let it get too hot.
Thanks in advance for your recommendations.
