A buddy of mine was hauling his fifth wheel home behind his 2000 F250 (which used to belong to me). I didn't get any details about how it failed, just that he "blew his trans". My brother is on his way as I type this to "rescue" him and get his trailer home.

He has a temp gauge (I know because I installed it when the truck was mine) but he's not the type to watch it carefully. Anyway, in case it needs rebuilding/replacing, I would like to recommend to him that he replace it with one of the aftermarket transmissions that are built-up - particulary for towing, if there is such a beast.

I've been out of the Ford market for a couple of years - so I've lost touch with who does what the best. Which aftermarket vendor would be most suitable to heavy towing? I see ATS is still at it. There was a place in Arkansas that rebuilt them, but I don't recall the name (just found it - BTS Brian's Truck Shop).

The truck runs a PPIII but he drives it like an old lady - so racing isn't an issue. However, he tows a pretty heavy 5er and I wouldn't be surprised if he let it get too hot.

Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

Thanks. As I recall, the BTS units were really something special.

Will BTS ship a trans to Calif for a third-party install? If so, I suppose we'll need to call them to see if they can refer us to someone in our area. He's located in the Diamond Bar area (just North of Orange County).

Any idea of price for a complete transmission (I suspect we'd have to ship the core back - assuming it's rebuildable).

BTS will ship a complete trans to you and will set it up according to your mods and planned use.

OK. Anyone ever hear of this?????

Ford confirmed the tranny is blown. They are offering him a Ford-built replacement that supposedly is beefier for $4k installed with a 150,000 mile warranty. Sounds pretty good to me. I assume he can get it serviced at any Ford dealer if it fails within the warranty period.

Is this too good to be true?

No Way! The OEM transmission is only warrantied for 36K. The price is close to any of the top builders except maybe ATS.

My rebuilt trans is a Ford unit and it was $4000.00 approx and has a 3 year warranty. I don't remember the milage. That included a new trans cooler and an inline filter. If that is part of the deal get them to replace the cooler with the V10 trans cooler. Fairway Ford Yorba Linda Ca.

Holy smokes, you can get a BTS and PI torque converter for $4. Not a good deal at all. Pretty much any of the aftermarkets trans are going to be right around the $4K mark with TC.

Ask the dealer for a list of what all they do and post it on here. I would really like to see what a factory $4K trany consists of. If they cant give you an answer I would run away from that deal.

For approx. $4000 you can have your choice from BTS, Black Widow Motorsports, Monster Box, or Sun Coast, including shipping. All of which are far superior to Ford. That deal from Ford is no deal at all.
OldmanII- no offense meant, but I think you really got taken by the dealer on that rebuild. You can buy that trans from Ford for $2200.

I agree with Ggg6. I just had Brain install his BTS transmission on my truck and it is a world of difference. For that much $ you can watch him build it for you instead of taking whatever Ford gives you. It is worth the $ for the peace of mind knowing you don't have to worry about the transmission any more. Note: It is no big deal for him to ship a new one to you or to receive a bad one for rebuild. He does it all the time.

I had the truck for 2 weeks when it went bad. I was not involved with this board at the time. If I had I would have used John Woods in Holtville CA. Its a 4 hour drive but from what I have heard and read it would have been worth the time.
