Trans has 180k, good maintance, getting a shudder occasionally when accelerating mostly while pulling 6500lb trailer, other than complete failure when do you consider a rebuilt trans? Lifespan of transmission is all over board dont want to cut it short if it will go 200k +, but dont want to be stranded. Not sure if normal failures are slow degredation or 1 day just gone

I would take the driveshaft out and inspect the u-joints before replacing the transmission.

When you checked the U-joints was that with the driveshaft removed from the truck?

Then you have no idea if the u-joints are good or bad.

Figured as much, i will pull shaft. Any guess on lifespan? After 180k is it a maintance issue at this point to replace?

At 180k, I would expect your u-joints have had a good long life. :)

Not a butt in but what’s the best way to check u joints with the shaft out of the truck?

With the shaft out of the truck move the joints and see if they move freely. If they have slack or a grinding noise or feel, they need to be replaced.

Finally replaced all u joints and carrier bearing, balanced shaft so will see what it does, in my mind still moving towards a new trans in next few months anyway. Hate to cut its life short but would rather replace before it leaves my stranded, also mot trans are 30 days out from build to delivery
