What type of mileage are you 4x4 guys getting; I have a guy telling me he gets 26-27 on the highway and that seems really economical for a 4x4.

Yep, your friend doesn't know what he's talking about. Dave Whitmire is a member on this forum who had his truck featured in Diesel Power Magazine (or one of those mags) for his 7.3L averaging over 26 mpg. However his is only 2wd and he's done a lot of mods to make it that fuel efficient.

Just took a trip from California to Tennessee (mostly I-70) to Iowa and back to Cal (I-80). Total miles was 5372.6 and total gallons of diesel was 294.4 which is 18.25 mpg. We had all kinds of conditions including downpours, heavy tail and head winds and all kinds of road grades. The Excursion was loaded to the hilt with stuff and 5 people. I had just installed the DP tuner with the 80econ tune and all I can say is that I am well pleased. I have made this trip many times and have never bettered 17 under the same conditions. This engine never ran better nor smoother than on this trip. I used Delo 400LE 15-w40 and used about 1 quart. My speeds on the interstates were mostly 75-80 mph where prudent to do so. For the first time I out did my '04 dmax on this trip. Again I am well pleased.

I run 17-18 mpg at 60-65 mph, closer to 21 at 55 mph. Hand calcuated, NOT from the trip computer. Might take me longer to get there, but I won't see you at the pump /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

In my 2001 Excursion 4x4 PSD, right now I'm averaging now about 21.1 MPG with ULSD. My max speed is 65 MPH with the caveat that I keep my boost below 4 PSI and EGT below 600 degrees. That means I might have to fall back to 55 MPH on uphills. I anticipate redlights and stopped/slowed traffic and try to always keep it rolling.

So unless his MPG comes from going downhill with a 50MPH tailwind, I honestly don't see how he can hit those numbers. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

I'm currently pulling in (hand calc -- no overhead to screw with my head...) an average of 18mpg, about a 50/50 mix of city/highway. My last jaunt between MD and NJ, programmer in Tow Safe, unloaded, running 68-75mph netted 17.9mpg.

Not noted in the sig, have 3.73 gears.

Not trying to go easy on it, nor do I try to go pedal to the metal...just average driving. I typically see about 16 to 16.5.

I guess I should mention a bit on why I am asking all these questions; I currently have a 2002 F250 Supercab SuperDuty 4x4 with the 5.4l V8 and my mileage is horrible; I get 10 in town and the best I get unloaded on the highway is 15. I had a 99 F350 4x4 diesel and I had to give it up because it left me stranded too many times; the Ford guys could not figure out what was causing it not to start so I traded it in for my 02. I have missed the power from my diesel ever since I got this truck; so now I am looking at a couple of different SuperDuty 4x4 trucks with diesels.

I have a 2000 CC 4x4 LWB SRW. When I ran the Edge when it was almost new, 18 mpg empty was an everyday occurance up until I went to a TS chip and mileage empty dropped to at best 15 mpg. Sold the TS and tuned with a DP, same as the TS. Now, before I get slammed, the DP tuning is bad ass and very fun to drive and I feel there is considerable difference tuning. Just made a 500 mile trip last week and total hand calc tally was 14.9 empty at 75 mph. Pooned tank so I know it was just as full as the first tank. I run around 12-12.5 pulling heavy on any one of our trailers, depending on fuel on fuel and elements of course. This is based on summer fuel, winter is, well you guessed it, worse. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Get this, my 2003 6.0 (same set up and gearing) norm was right at 18 mpg empty and 14-14.5 loaded until they did the last reflash. Now it is where the 2000 7.3 is at. It is programmed with SCT.

I get about 15.5 at 75 on the interstate

16.5 at 70

20+ at 70 through the flat lands of west Texas.

Now I drive by the tach. I try to never let it get over 2000.

The work truck gets about 18 in town and 12-14 on the highway. Stinkin tall gears! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I have only had my truck since Sept 2006 and have put 10,000 miles on her since then. I hand calculate my mileage and have averaged 15.32 MPG over that time with a spread of 14.38 to 15.72 MPG.
