When going down the road, my 4 WD transfer will jump into 4 HI without being switched to do that. Dealer says the electronic module is defective, although the self test on the module checks OK. Also they want 100 bucs to program a new module. Is that true ? The Ford manual says nothing about programing it, just pull it out and replace with new if defective. I installed a switch to disable the transfer case motor until I get this resolved. Any ideas on what might be wrong.

4X4 operation on your vehicle is controlled by the generic electronic module (GEM). This module must be configured for your specific vehicle after replacement.

Dealer want's 320 bucs for module and 100 bucs to program it. Think I'll just install the switch permanent. I just turn the switch on then switch to 4WD Hi or LO, so far works good that way, or at least until it craps out all together. Thanks for the info.

EDIT 12/20 1:00PM Just found out this morning that if the windshield had leaked, water could have run down and got into the GEM module. Evidently Ford had a problem with this and I did not know about it .
