It is a ZF-5 transmission.
They come in two flavors, 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive, they can not be interchanged without an extreme amount of work. So you will need to get the correct version for your truck.

The S5-42 was the first of these; there are two subvariants: wide-ratio and close-ratio. The wide-ratio version was available in the years 1987-97, while the close-ratio version was only available on the later 7.3 engines of 1994-97. The S5-42 was then replaced by the S5-47 for 1998.

A change in number can mean many things or nothing. From what I have always heard only the close ratio was used with the diesel bell-house for the 6.9 and the non-ps 7.3s. You still need to know if it is 4x4 or 4x2.

The close-ratio version is available only in F-Series vehicles with a 7.3L diesel engine and a GVW over 8,500 lbs. The ratios are as follows:

CLOSE RATIO (7.3L DIESEL ONLY)

2nd: 2.37:1
3rd: 1.42:1
4th: 1.0:1
5th: 0.77:1
Reverse: -3.79:1

WIDE RATIO (GAS AND DIESEL)

3rd: 1.61:1
4th: 1.0:1

Ben,

Have you ever seen a wide ratio mounted to a non-powerstroke diesel?
