Bosch pump but I forgot what the numbers on the side were I'll look tuesday and post em.

505 cubic inch = 8.275467355 liter
Looks like 8.3 to me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif
The older Case IH tractors called it a 505 as well.
They don't even have Cummins on the label, but that's what they are. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

It's the same as an 8.3L Cummins. Good engine, but some were detuned as low as 210HP.

[/ QUOTE ]

my replay earlier was to REDHORSE on the triple nickle thing....

BUT yes some were detuned as are all these. the HP numbers are posted on the VC, and it sucks.

We know your trucks' power sucks. Let's get past that and start figuring out how to help you out. We need the year of them so we can tell if they're electronic or mechanical 8.3L diesels.

Once we know that, we can proceed. Look for an engine PCM or a Bosch pump or get us the model year.

Electronic 8.3's can get big power increases for small money.

My dad's KW has the 8.3L Cummins. Yes, it's a good engine. I think his is rated for 220hp.

I'm running a '96 250 HP mechanical version with a Bosch P7100 inline pump. I've turned this one up a bit. 250 HP just wasn't enough for my motorhome application. But I didn't turn it up alot. It's not hard to do. I didn't have to make any changes to the governor settings though. I did change my aneroid a bit so it fuels a bit more before the boost builds. Helps on takeoff. Doesn't do much more smoke though.

The Allison MD3060 behind it isn't good much above 300 HP. Definitely a good engine though. I've got about 60,000 miles on it and only regular maintenance. Always starts at the touch of the key. Only had to use starting fluid once at about 0 deg F.

I tow an 8000 lb vehicle behind it for a total weight of about 34,000 lbs. See my avatar. I tow my F350 CC dually 4x4 behind it.

I dont know the exact year but its a mechanical pump, no electronics.

fully loaded it will see 10 tons plus what ever the truck weights. 7 speed trans behind it.

just pull the back cover off or what, I take it there isn't a fuel plate on these, just a metering screw????

210 HP should be enough to pull 35,000 lbs or even more. I've seen more 210 HP tandems at ~54,000lbs than any other HP rating. It won't go 55 up hills, but it will do it. The good part is it will live a long & happy life at low HP.
Have you driven a lot of other trucks? No offense, but this ain't a pick-up truck, medium duty trucks don't get where they're going when fully loaded all that fast. You would need over 300Hp to really get that size load to hold decent speed up hills.

There might be a plate you can grind, like in a 5.9L Cummins. Just be warned that without a pyro to watch EGT's, turn up the fuel and EGT's go up, too. Heavy loads + overly high EGTS = melted pistons & turbos.

yes driven plenty of trucks, there single axle trucks that only get used 3 months out of the year. mine has 284K on it, which to me seems plenty low for that motor. I would venyure to say that its as slow as our mack semis.....

it just sucks trying to get out into traffic with it. traffic in this town gets pretty crazy, and with some more beans it would me ALOT easier.

The Bosch P7100 pump has a cam plate (fuel plate) in it. I replaced mine with a plate from TST. Don't remember what # plate I put in now. It was a long time ago. I also put in a pyro and boost gauge while I was at it. It DEFINITELY needs a pyro!

To do governor adjustments, you need to change the governor springs and it's not really a do-it-yourself project unless you really know the insides of that injection pump. Mine stops about 2600 RPM and the Allison lets it get up to about 2500 under WOT before shifting. With the 4.63 rear end i've got, I manage about 85 top end. The 2nd OD in that Allison is around .65 to 1.
