You're absolutely right - batteries don't last long in these trucks. I didn't see where you mention slow cranking in your first post. New batteries might be the answer here. A Nippondenso style starter would be nice as well.
I'm not sure you can blame weak batteries for white smoke on startup. That might still be a glow plug or two out.
