Hey Guys,

Got another problem I'm in need of assistance with...Mark K. has saved my butt in the past and I'm hoping he sees this and can shed some light, as well as any others with an opinion.

I have a 2004 F250 that left me and my family stranded on the side of the highway yesterday because the transmission just stopped working. Was driving along and it simply wouldn't engage in any gear. Engine revved up, but wouldn't put any power to the wheels. Guardrail to the right of me, on a hill, I could only stop and leave the rear-end hanging out in traffic.
I shut the truck down, but being on a pretty tough blindspot in the road I wanted to try to get it a bit further up the road. Started it back up, put it in Drive and it engaged! 30 seconds later, nothing. Coasted off onto the shoulder, shut the truck off and called AAA. Was snowing here in New England yesterday so after a few minutes I started the truck back up to get some heat going, tried to engage again, and it worked! Started pulling forward and 10 seconds later, nothing, just before I edged back out into traffic. Tried Reverse and it wouldn't work either.
I figured out that turning the truck off and then back on would get me a few seconds of transmission activity before completely quitting on me.

Long story short, got the truck towed to the driveway for further diagnosis.

I noticed Tow/Haul light flashing during yesterdays event so I plugged in my SCT Tuner this a.m. and it gave me these codes: I also noticed my Speedometer was surging up and down while truck was idling this morning as well. Not sure if that happened yesterday or not as I was more focused on trying to get the family off the road.

I've been running Matt's SLR+ tune for years and it's been flawless, but my thought was maybe something was causing it to act up and decided to tune it back to stock and see if the issue went away. Nope.

Before swapping back to stock I cleared the DTC's. After a few back and forth trips just down the driveway to see if the tranny was working, it seemed to have been fixed. So just upon pulling out of the driveway for a longer test ride through the neighborhood, lost all forward drive. All gears. No Reverse either. So having learned from previous attempts, I simply shut truck off, started it back up, put it into Reverse and was able to back her up to it's final resting spot, where she now sits, and I turn to you guys for some help.

Mind you, I just dropped $6K in new headwork two weeks ago, $3k in new Billsteins and track arms last week, so now with this tranny issue, I can't bear the thought of what this is going to run me. Truck is not lifted and not running 20's. I love this thing but man....the bleeding!

To me it almost sounds electrical (fingers crossed!), since I can get transmission engagement, albeit only briefly, but I'm certainly not a transmission expert -though if history dictates anything, given all the bugs I've fought through with this thing over the years, it seems like I'm about to become one! :winking
Unfortunately, I also heard that a tranny can still get partial engagement and still be fried, so I don't know.
I did detune to stock when I sent my truck in for all that headwork, but I've been running Matt's tune once I got it back. That was only a couple weeks ago and I was hoping it might have been a corrupted upload or something, but seems to replicate in stock tuning anyway. However, I've been in and out of stock/performance tune many times over the years and never had a problem before so I don't suspect it is that.

Lastly, I ran the SCT Tuner after the stock tune swap this morning and these are the codes I got:
P0603 and P1000. That KAM one I'm a bit confused on, but again, looking for any help possible on here before I go mortgage my house. Tough finding many good Diesel techs in my area so I typically end up doing the work myself, but this is my busy season and if I can at least get a point in the right direction I might be able to bypass the diagnosis fees with the help of you guys, and take it in for the proper service, wherever this leads.

Many thanks in advance...

The first thing to do is to see if it has any ATF left in it. Very low fluid could do this.

Hey there Mark --- Yes, I did that. All full. Nice and red and doesn't smell burnt at all.

The KAM code is because you have a tuner installed. The P1000 means you haven't run it enough to operate all of the tests.

The next step is to put a pressure gauge in the test port. You need pressure at idle in each position, PRND321. Then, if possible, pressure at stall in R, D, 3, 2, and 1. NEVER HOLD STALL FOR MORE THAN 5 SECONDS, AND ALLOW 30 SECONDS IN NEUTRAL BETWEEN EACH STALL TEST.

Thanks, Mark. I'll post results after I build the pressure gauge and test. Most likely won't happen till the weekend.

Forgot to mention one other thing which was odd.

Not sure if it was related or not but a few days prior to transmission failure I was hearing an intermittent air 'whooshing' noise under acceleration only in lower gears. As soon as truck kicked into final gear, noise would stop instantly.
Sounded like it was coming from under hood though, driver side, which made me think air intake, as I'm running a K&N, but everything was tight.

Sound made is tough to describe...almost like a cross between the sound a loose bearing would make, and air sucking.

Again, only under acceleration, and randomly, not rhythmically, like a wheel bearing would sound like. Not like anything I've ever heard before.
