Alrighty... looking back in past posts, I have some holes in knowledge, maybe someone can elighten me...

I am considering switching to full synthetic, bought some at Wally world 5w/40 Rotella, they didn't have 15w/40. I have always used Mobil 15w/40 dino oil... so my questions...

1- Any harm going to 5w/40 syn? I can get 15w/40 syn elsewhere, just have to travel more. Not sure if it was a requirement to reduce the wieght in synthetic.

2- Do I need to get a bypass filter thingamajig? Cost much? Is it a kit? Can I get more miles between changes without it?

3- Where do you get the oil lab tested? Do you have to do it much?

Ok.. thats it.

Thanks

5w-40 is perfect....Bypass is not necesary but it is nice...Blackstone labs is the popular UOA place to use. OA is only needed if doing extended drains.

Ok.. kewl. Glad I don't have to take it back. Now, just out of curiosity... next time should I get 15w/40 syn? Considering that the ambient temps around here are about 80-90F until winter. ( Guess I don't understand the physics of dino-vs-synthetic viscosity ).

Concentrate on the 40 number. The 5 or 15 number has no effect on running normal up to temperature running viscosity.

I've been using the Amsoil Series 3000 5W-30 for over a year
with excellent results. Study up and make your decision. Remember,
if you go with extended drains, don't forget the oil analysis. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif
