I think it has to come off. Either way, every tech I've head discuss it has agreed, it saves a ton of time to pull the cab.

 

It is possible to fit the motor in without pulling the cab, but there will be a little "undressing" required. Take the turbo off the motor, and pull the front of the truck apart - radiator support, radiator, intercooler, condensor, grill, and other whatnot until you have a gaping maw to shove the motor through.

String your chain pretty tight, also, so you can fit the end of the cherry picker under the cowl when you get the motor most of the way in.

 

i merely pull the tranny & raise the frt. portion of cab just enough to remove it. i don't even remove the turbo. i also remove the eng. to do the tsb for the h/p branch tube & coupler.i even reseal any leaks i find when its out. its not that bad if you have a rack. pull the frt. & middle body bolts to raise the cab.

 

We use the Rotunda engine lift.... bolts to the front of the block with a tie-back to the rear lifting eye.... This thing works like a charm with no chance of damaging the cowl or the cowl insulation. The engine will still require some undressing.

My hoist is unsuitable for lifting the cab so I just don't do it. Our two other diesel techs can lift cabs but have decided not to. FGor the customer, the sight of his truck split into so many pieces is unnerving. For the techs, we find that there are too many opportunities for squeaks and rattles.

While we might take a little longer, we don't introduce new issues either....

 

I would just pull the cab if you have the ability. If not remove the turbo.
