Getting ready to do a intercooler into a 1997 Powerstroke, and wanted to know if anyone has installed a '03-newer 6.0 intercooler into theirs.

I know using a 99-03 7.3 intercooler will retro into a '97-older Powerstroke, but would a '03-newer 6.0 intercooler work?

I have seen the tubing kits for sale to hook up the 7.3 I/C and wonder if the same kit could be used, providing the in/out locations are the same on the coolers.

Thought maybe finding a newer I/C so that it wouldn't have as much oil and misc inside the cooler.

Thanks for the help DieselStop readers.

I have everything I need to install my 6.0 cooler (I think) I just have not had time to do it. I dont think there is a pipe kit that fits without modifing, I have the set of 6.0 pipes that came with the cooler and I bought a set of 7.3 pipes I hope I can make them work. I do know that I will have to do some cutting and welding on the pipes to make them work. My cooler does not look like it has any oil in it but I'm gonna wash it out with simple green and let it soak awhile just so I know its clean. If I happen to start this install in a week or so I'll let you know how I make out. Thanks

DIESELDUTTON, that would be great on the update.

Have you measured the in/out locations of the 6.0 intercooler to see if the location are the same of a 7.3 intercooler?

Not quite the same outlet locations but no big deal, plus the left one is 3" instead of 3 1/4". If your truck is 2wd you will need to drop the sway bar a couple inches. See pics for install details /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I would have to look back thru my notes, but I thought someone on here was selling the tubing kits already done (for the 7.3 I/C), so once you got the intercooler in then the tubes mounted right up so there was no need for measuring and welding, have you seen them on here?

Look through my pictures linked below in my signature. I put the 6.0 cooler in mine and fabbed up some 7.3 pipes to fit. The cooler install pics are there but I haven't put the pipe pictures online yet. Maybe this evening I can.

Fixxing to swap to a 6 leaker cooler need more cooling room for things to come .but yes a 6 leaker cooler is alittle different. I sourced some 3 1/4 to 3 boots from an online supplier.

I used A GTS kit designed for a 7.3 IC when I put in my 6.0 IC.

Rtxcoon used Banks 7.3 stuff to put in his 6.0 cooler.

And the 3" boots will fit on the 3.25 outlet.

I did the same with the GTS kit. Only I went to ford and bought the 3-3.25" boot. Just say ya need one for the inlet side of a IC for a 6oh powerstroke.

Rtxcoon, thats seems pretty strait forward on sectioning the tubes and welding them back together for the fit.

This is good info from everyone to prep for the jobs, thanks guys.

If this helps, the difference that may require sectioning a pipe (couldn't view Rtxcoon' pics - I am on dial-up right now) is that on the 7.3 cooler the outlets are at the same height, but on the 6.0 cooler the passenger side outlet is an inch or so higher than the driver's side so a pre-fabbed kit may end up too high before it bends back towards the y-pipe.

God Bless,

TC

Extra $0.02 - I have the 7.3 installed and purchased a 6.0 to possibly use as an upgrade. The 6.0 unit seems to have a small benefit in frontal area, but all things considered, the way the 6.0 unit is dimensioned, it places the core "lower" when measured from the outlets and mounting brackets. The way I installed my unit, the 6.0's core would be significantly lower (~3") and in a less desirable position as far as airflow throught the bumper and grill. So if you are starting from scratch, try to mount that 6.0 unit as high on the rad support as you can. It isn't obvious when you are installing it but when the front end goes back together you'll see that the higher you mount it the better it will align with the grill and bumper vents! The wider 7.3 unit also matches the width of our grill opening real well, whereas the 6.0 will not "use up" all the width available. This is not criticism of the 6.0 or its use... just observation for y'all (y'all is a Big_Fig-ism) to consider!
