I have searched on here and the internet and can't find what is the normal idle speed for a 2006 6.0 PSD. Mine idles at just under 750rpm and that seems high to me.

When in OD on level pavement and the brake is released the truck goes! I believe it should not move. To me this means it is burning more fuel and also causing more wear on the brakes and maybe the TC/Trans. I told them at the dealership it was idling too high and they said that it was normal.

Ahhh yes, another 7.3 guy learning the charistics of a 6.0.

Yep 750 is "normal" idle, and it will jump up to about 1250 in high idle to help prevent wet stacking. When they 1st came out, they idled at 600, but problems with the PI and surging & romping forced Ford to up the idle.

It'll rev up to 3500 w/out any problems, and it'll take 2-3 seconds of cranking to fire off.

Yes Sir! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I have been reading and learning a lot about the differences on here but I searched an couldn't find anything about idle speed. (Just trying to find ways that might get mpg closer to 17). I see that this engine needs to rev higher between shifts and it needs a load/high rpm's occassionally to help clear the EGR,etc. Thank you everyone for the replies.

I have noticed that inconsistancy also, sometimes instant ignition other times 2-4 seconds of cranking. wierd!

Jeese, I gotta learn to spell one of these days.

The starting thing is because of the HPOP oil system. The injectors use HP oil to fire, and the HPOP has a small seperate oil sump (it holds about .8 qt, and won't drain out in an oil change). While its pretty good at holding pressure, it will bleed off over night or after a long sit. When you go to change your oil, the book says 15 qt capacity, but the truck is holding back that 0.8. If you put 14 back in, you should be right in the middle of the bulb (when seated).
