Is there any Step-by-step on the 6.0 cooler install?

[/ QUOTE ]

The following three posts from other members are not step-by-step but may be helpful. I saved these for help with my next upgrade. Sounds pretty straight forward.

I installed the huge 6.0 cooler a few months ago. I did it from the top, just pop off the rubber shield, remove the hood latch, unbolt the condensor on one side and you have a clear shot at it. I did remove the grill to make getting at the bolts easier.

I removed the grill and pulled the AC condenser out of the way to get to my bottom bolts. the condenser can be pulled out and moved out of the way without losing AC charge.

Pull the crash bar and the top mounting plates for the Radiator and the plastic cover off. This way you'll get access from both the top and bottom without messing with the condenser since it charged with R134. I believe there are 4 bolts. On the 6.0 cooler you'll need to get the rubber cushions and the longer bolts from ford to make it an exact fit. Brian at BTS may have an aftermarket solution.

You don't need longer bolts or rubber bushings!!! Use the same bolts as the old cooler. I installed mine a few months ago and I love the 40 degree drop. The top post above is mine. Just pull off the rubber cover in front of the deagass bottle and the one below, unbolt the hood latch and the one bolt that holds the condensor bracket in place on the drivers side. This will allo the condensor to be pulled out of the way to get the coolers out and in. You will need to get 1/2" trans line which can be hard to find at least it was in my small town!!! Napa can order it, you will need about 8ft. You will also need to get the brass fittings to go from the 3/8" line to the 1/2". This can be done with barbed brass fitting from any hardware store. Follow the hard tranny lines, where they end and go to rubber lines go about 6" in and cut them and go the rest of the way with the 1/2" line. If you have any more ??? just PM. Total install was about 1 hour.

NChornet... you've convinced me to go ahead with this. Any suggestions on where to purchase a new 6.0 transmission cooler and approximate co$t? I assume that a new one is the best way to go.

Thanks!

Don't forget the most important part. The truck has 3/8 in. cooler lines and the 6.0 cooler has 1/2 in. fittings. Just use a short piece of 1/2 in. hose to an adapter from 1/2 in. to 3/8 in. and then a short piece of 3/8 in. hose to the cooler lines. All you need is 2 male or female threaded 1/2 in. nipples and 2 opposite threaded 3/8 in. nipples. Screw them together, with thread tape, and assemble the hoses to finish the job. Most if not all can be done from the bottom. The upper bolts are easier to deal with from the top but I don't see why the hood latch has to be removed. I watched the boys install mine at BTS and I don't think they removed the hood latch. They did drop the crash bar and pull the rubber flap off of the top.

Ebay is a good source for your cooler. They are not always on there but most of the time there are a few to choose from.

This sounds like about the biggest no-brainer upgrade that I've heard yet for these trucks, since heat kills trannies and most people buy a SD for the towing capabilities. What about the V-10 cooler? How does that compare to the 6.0?

At any rate, many modifications to cars and trucks are a trade-off; you gain a little something, (like performance), and you give up a little something, (like economy or durabilty/long life). Whenever I find a mod that is win-win-win and doesn't cost a fortune, I'm on it like a hobo on a ham sandwich. I'm gonna get one of those puppies. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

The V10 cooler is smaller than the 6.0 but many have used it with good results. They both bolt right in using the same bolts and locations.
100 bucks is a great price but will be hard to find. I had a source where I was getting them and selling them for $135 but I haven't been able to get them in a while. I have a list of members wanting them. You want a brand new one. You will also need an extra quart and a half of fluid to put in it. If I remember the hood latch was a must, but hey it's only two bolts and if it keeps the fins from being scraped it is well worth the minute it takes to remove it. These things are fragile and the fins will bend from the slightest touch. It was defintely one of the best mods I have done for my truck!!!

Only issue i see with this mod is a slight decrease in Intercooler efficiency.

other than that like has been said deffinately a no-brainer!

Ok guys I have a question on this and maybe you can help. Why not just add a fan with a temp switch to your trany cooler?? You could use something such as this http://www.tciauto.com/cooling.htm . Look at the fan and then look at the Thermostatic control switch for electric fans.

Please give me the pros and cons to this vs the upgraded cooler.

It seem to me if you add the fan you dont hurt the intercooler and I dont see a down side to it please advise me if you see something that I dont. Sorry if it seems like I am jacking your thread.

It would be easy to know if this is a real issue; it would be reflected in higher EGTs or reduced performance/efficiency/MPGs. Anyone w/ a 6.0 cooler and gauges that can comment on before and after results?

I understand the logic, (bigger tranny cooler blocking off bigger part of IC), but doesn't air have to pass through the AC condenser and radiator as well as the trans cooler before it gets to the IC anyways? Must be some pretty hot air by that time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

wonder if anyone has ever gone to the trouble of a smaller radiator and put the IC infront to see if there are any gains. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

could be, but if you get a smaller radiator, then you can squeeze the IC up front and the tubes beside the radiator and other cooling units. the radiator being the showstopper for moving the IC up front. I'm not looking at the truck to be honest to see if its pheasable. i was just tossing it out there.

I believe the order is A/C, tranny, IC then radiator...

There's a little bitty cooler up front (and low) of all of this and that is the PS fluid cooler.

Anybody have te 6.0 cooler part number?

[/ QUOTE ]

I'd like the part number as well. I did a search on ebay and came up with two different coolers that claimed to be for the 6.0 transmission. Both auctions listed the ford part number and they were definitely different. One said it was for the torqueshift transmission, which I would guess is for a 2005 and up truck? The coolers looked pretty different. If I had to guess I would think it was the one that didn't say for the torqueshift, but want to verify.
