My first 1,500 miles with the 6.2

I've seen a lot of post about the new 6.7liter diesel mpg, but can anyone post what they are getting with their 6.2 gasser and with what gears?
OK Dudes, here's the 411 on what I have seen so far on my machine. First, I took delivery of my 2011 F-250 SD on 18 June. It is in Lariat Super Cab FX4 trim, 6.2 gasser, 4.30 gears in the rear end. This is my 5th "truck", first Super Duty. All numbers are from actual miles driven and fuel uploaded. I always fill, refilling after passing the 1/4 point on the fuel gauge with 87 octane Shell gasoline. I have refueled the machine 4 times so far. I use the machine mostly local, have towed a 3,600 pound boat twice, (175 total towing miles
), towing only after the first 1,000 miles. When I ordered the truck I went with the 4.30's instead of the 3.73's because by my calculations, on the type of driving I would be using the machine for that the fuel mileage would not be that much different than with the 3.73's and the towing would be better. I do not drive for hours on limited access highways at a steady cruise speed. In that case the 3.73's would show there merit.

The average speed calculation comes from the engine run clock and the miles driven between fueling. I do not let the engine idle anymore than necessary and get underway within 30 -60 seconds from start up. I drive in a consistent manner and do not zoom away from stop lights, as I see my share of them. Besides, only a fool would drive like a cowboy in a 6,500+ curb weight machine. The average speed is an interesting number because it shows just how slow actual point to point driving in a non-limited access road environment is.

So far I am very impressed with the new 6.2 engine, it's very smooth and powerful. I don't think that the guys with the 3.73 final drive are doing much better with their average fuel mileage.

To Date: 1,632.9 miles on the clock

1st tank of fuel:
engine clock: 12:54:00
miles: 354.4
average speed: 27.47 m.p.h.
fuel milage: 12.51 m.p.g.

2nd tank of fuel:
engine clock: 13:08:50
miles: 348.2
average speed: 26.48 m.p.h.
fuel milage: 12.23 m.p.g.

3rd tank of fuel:
engine clock: 10:19:10
miles: 282.3
average speed: 27.35 m.p.h.
fuel milage: 12.16 m.p.g.

4th tank of fuel:
engine clock: 10:18:50
miles: 284.7
average speed: 27.59 m.p.h.
fuel milage: 12.39 m.p.g.

The numbers are derived from a spreadsheet I keep, my the trip computer looks pretty accurate, calling out 12.2 -12.5 miles per gallon. What final drive do you guys have in your machines?
I have attached a photo of my machine below.

Your truck is sharp looking, is it sterling gray. I am waiting for my 250 Lariat again, the first one the dealer ordered came in with the wrong color and seats. Thanks
Hi,

6.2 Gasser Fuel Mileage Update

2011 Ford Super Duty F-250 Crew Lariat with FX4, 6.2 gas with 3.73 locker, 1100 miles getting 12.4 MPG
Fuel milage update, real world use, 6.2 gasser.

When I ordered the truck I went with the 4.30's instead of the 3.73's because by my calculations, on the type of driving I would be using the machine for that the fuel mileage would not be that much different than with the 3.73's and the towing would be better. To Date: 2,965.7 miles on the clock

6th tank of fuel:
(Best mileage on a tank so far, finally had some open road use.)
engine clock: 09:30:00
miles: 348.2
average speed: 36.65 m.p.h.
fuel milage: 14.1 m.p.g.

7th tank of fuel:
(Towed my boat for 175 miles of this tank, or 55.22%)
engine clock: 12:18:52
miles: 316.9
average speed: 36.65 m.p.h.
fuel milage: 12.46 m.p.g.

8th tank of fuel:
engine clock: 12:15:10
miles: 372.2
average speed: 30.38 m.p.h.
fuel milage: 13.23 m.p.g.

I am really glad I ordered the 4.30's, I don't see the 3.73 guys doing any better in fuel mileage and this thing has great low end grunt. If I spent all my time on the interstate the 3.73's would look better. But I can't say enough about how great this thing is.

Before I purchaced my 2011 Super Duty I never expected good gas mileage, I bought my truck for a purpose, not for great gas mileage.
Look at the mini pickups like the Ford Ranger, Dodge Dakota, they don't get much better gas mileage than the full size pickups, but they can't haul or tow the loads like the full size trucks.
Be satisfied that you own a Super Duty knowing you can do more with it than owning a mini pickup, also your 2011 Super Duty, gas is flex fuel, you can get E85 for 10 cents less per gallon.
You can make money with your Super Duty, plowing snow, hauling, towing a 5th wheel trailer (5th wheel trailers are getting more and more popular where some trucking firms will hire you to haul large volume, lighter loads, If I owned a 5th wheel trailer I can get a hauling job tommorrow hauling windows and insulation)
thinking about owning a 5th wheel trailer, but I have a full time job with lots of OT, if I didn't have a full time job I would own one.
All good points, yes this machine is NOT a Toyota Prius (Thank God!) and fuel mileage is not why you buy one. But I do think that for this machine to get 12 -14 mpg's under normal use is a plus for the 6.2 gasser. Machines like this use to get 8 -10 mpg's, with less power. I'm just saying. :banger:

I've got a 66 mile a day commute (33 or so each way) and of that 28 miles of it is highway. I'm wondering if, with 4.30 gears I could pull down 14/15 mpg.

It seems very possible since my commute is pretty flat with about a 20' change in altitude the entire trip and usually stays at 70 mph and under.

Any thoughts? I'm currently getting 14.5 to 15 mpg w/ the a/c on in my Z71 CC/SB w/ 285 BFG ATs and 3.42 (yeah yeah they are TOO tall) gears.
As stated, I have only had my machine for a shade over 3,000 miles. (I have the 4.30 rear set) I have seen 14.1 on a tank, and I would not really call it "highway" driving on that tank full. I am sure you will see 14+, 15? maybe. I am happy with the 4.30's

MC31,
I arrived to my destination in SC a couple of hours ago. My hand calculated mileage was 16 mpgs! I had the cruise set at 75 mph and the only time I slowed was due to heavy traffic. I was not towing but was hauling about 500 pounds of stuff and the family. My total trip distance was 211.5 miles, and it took 13.2 gallons to top it back off.
That's real good news. Just a quick update, I refueled this morning, had a another 14+ mpg tankful (14.5), my normal driving week or so. Hey, I knew this thing was no econo-box when it came to the fuel department, that's not why I bought it, but for what a real machine this is and how I use it I am really happy with 14 mpg's. This thing is a real truck, not some F-150 poser box. As a side note, I did consider the F-150 before I ordered the SD, am soooooo glad I went with the Super Duty.

I'm just saying.

1st Year 6.2 FUEL Mileage

SO, what's the consensus on the 4.30 versus 3.73 when it comes to mileage? How much WORSE is the 4.10 really?
Here are some photos and a rundown of my F-250 on it 's 1st birthday from delivery. (Note the aggregate fuel mileage of 12.99 miles per gallon, and this is a 4.30 final drive truck, unladen weight of 6,532 pounds).

I ordered it because the dealer did not have the truck exactly as I wanted it on the lot. (Not to big of a jump on this as you can get this thing so many different ways) It's a F-250 Lariat SC, FX4, NAV Package, 6.2 gasser with 4.30 final drive. It's my personal use truck, I tow my boat with it, not much other "heavy" use. Hardly any long haul stuff, mostly "local" driving. I picked the 6.2 because of the cost of the diesel, and with the 4:30 gears it easily handle's my tow requirements. I am running AMSOIL SAE 0W-20 Signature Series 100% Synthetic Motor Oil, it has had normal service, (1) PA State Inspection and (2) tire rotations. It does not require PA State Emissions Testing because it is licensed as a weight class 3 truck. No maintenance issues, it's been perfect. As of this morning, the odometer reads 12,005.8 miles, (it had 5.6 miles on it at delivery). To date I have put 924.46 gallons of 87 octane fuel it it. To record an aggregate fuel consumption of 12.99 miles per gallon over the last year. That's summer, winter, sleet, snow and towing use. To sum it up, I am very happy with it.
